If you mean links that are included using the [url] tags, those should not get mangled. If you mean links that are just pasted directly into the body of a post, yes, it's an anti-page-widening measure.
I didn't even realize that there are [url] tags. I'm used to browsers either recognizing urls in text automatically or at least being able to right click on them to open in a new tab without being explicitly created links. At least now I can fix any that I've posted.

That would be great, but I would say having clickable buttons which insert matching tags around the cursor (or selected text), so users don't have to type out each set of tags, would be higher up the priorities of enhancing usability. Or WYSIWYG editing which doesn't even have tags in the user-visible editing window, but the former seems a less drastic change to implement.

Don't think discourse is ready for production, but I'd love to see a stack overflow section for rules questions anyway.
