On the one hand, I want to use WBL to balance encounters and treasure. But it looks like a lot of bookkeepping, and getting my players to submit timely accounting overviews won't be easy either.
How do other people run this? Is there actually any efficient, reasonably painless system for getting a rough overview of how wealthy everyone is?

Hero lab tallies character wealth automatically. It's pretty painless to use, and doesn't include too much extra work beyond what we are already doing to make the characters and print sheets in the first place.
I keep a file for all my players characters and use it extensively when planning treasure. If one character has been getting too little loot, something will drop soon that would be best used by that character.

Hero Lab does not account for crafted items coming in at cost rather than price. One of my players uses HL and has to manually account for it.
Ascalaphus: what I do is toss out the 'sell for half' rule. Then it is very easy to keep track of how much equipment the players have. It is almost identical to the amount of equipment you have given them.
