Weapon Style: You gain proficiency with one weapon that has the monk special weapon quality (see page 145 of the Core Rulebook).
By the way this is written (listing CRB page 145), I would say no, but go ahead and FAQ your question. I know that just because weapons in Ultimate Combat are labeled as Monk weapons, monks don’t automatically get those. They only automatically know the monk weapons from the CRB.
I don’t know if this was the intent of the book, or if because it was printed before Ultimate Combat that it didn’t just say all monk weapons.
But as written, the answer is no. It would need a further clarification by Mike Brock, Mark Moreland or John Compton to change it.

It's a weapon that has the monk special characteristic, so yes you can choose it as the weapon you gain proficiency in with the trait.
Yep, this is my read as well. I can see no support for the argument that that it is "really" only a monk weapon if it both has the monk special property and monks are always proficient in it.

Umm, go to page 145 of the CRB...there is only the description of what the monk special quality is.

I think the (see page...) is for a description of the "monk special weapon quality", not a "you may only choose weapons from this listing" directive. That is my interpretation.
Well this is not an issue that should see Table Variation, so I’d suggest we FAQ it so Mike can make a determination what he wants it to mean.
But based on precedence of the Developer’s ruling on monk weapons from UC not being automatically known by Monks; that only Core Rule Book monk weapons are part of the weapon proficiencies known automatically by a Monk.
And that this ability says (see page 145, Core Rulebook) makes this not cut and dried.

It doesn't matter if a monk already knows how to use the weapon or not. The trait GIVES proficiency in a single weapon that has a SPECIFIC trait. That's it.

And as mentioned above, on page 145 of CRB it's a description of the specific weapon trait. There's no list of weapons there.

Ah, my bad, at work so only have the PRD, and not specific pages in the CRB to look at.
If that is indeed the case, and all that page does is define what a Monk weapon is, and a Fighting Fan has the Monk special quality, then I'd say you can take fighting fan with that trait.

official PFS ruling please.
does the lantern lodge trait, weapon style, grant proficiency with the fighting fan?
It does. IIRC, the text of Weapon Style was cleaned up and changed to its current form in order to answer this exact question.
The fighting fan is a pretty crappy weapon, so I am glad that proficiency doesn't take a whole feat!

This coming from someone who uses that weapon as their primary?
Hehehe, yep. 1d4 damage, Piercing or Slashing, 20/x3 crit range... it's equivalent to a dagger! I remember being very surprised when it was decided that monks didn't automatically get proficiency. I'm so glad it doesn't take a feat!

Fun fact: the fighting fan is the only slashing weapon explicitly listed in the close weapon group.
Despite appearing in Ultimate Equipment, the klar does NOT appear in any category in the UE weapon group listings (though it can be said that the "counts as a light wooden shield"/"counts as a light steel shield" includes for weapon groups, which I agree with).

Monk weapons are different from the monk weapon special quality. I think the weapons with this qualitiy are all from Ultimate Combat and the trait only calls those weapons out.
So yes it should be right.
The monk special quality IS what makes a weapon a monk weapon. It doesn't mean monks are proficient with. It means monks can flurry with them.
Weapons with this quality are found in multiple sources.
