Advice

Hey folks,
I am considering building a backup character for my current game as I have the impression I may get snuffed pretty soon. My current character is a generalist, but this time around I think I'll build a support character.

I had my eye on a Dwarf sensai monk with some qinngong powers and maybe hungry ghost to build up ki for buffing. Back story is a veteran with a somewhat sordid past(hungry ghost) who has taken his lumps and wants to help others as a sort of personal atonement.

I wouldn't mind some input on the character. He's a middle aged dwarf so there will be a little bit of adjustment on his ability scores.

Level 10
Ability array(adjusted for age and levels)
str 14
dex 14
con 14
int 14
wis 21
cha 6

I'm not sure if hungry ghost is the way to go, but it seemed like a neat concept in my head.

Cousin!!!!! ;)

Have fun!

What is the point buy?

What books are allowed?

What races are allowed?

The point buy is 26, for some reason I'm unaware of. There is no book restriction that I'm aware of aside from maybe 3.5. He's a dwarf... so dwarf.

Maybe ki mystic would be better than hungry ghost... Maybe a stunning fist build?

Grand Lodge

What about Duergar?

What about a Dwarf-borne Tiefling or Aasimar?

Is Monk a must?

Nah, sounds like you have a fun dwarf already roughed out, so play him and see how the heads roll.

I... guess some of those options would be okay. Monk isn't a must, but I don't really feel like doing a caster, which reduces your options significantly. There are also two rangers in my group so that's a straight up no.

Grand Lodge

So, let's get the list down:

1) Dwarf(or the like).

2) Middle age category.

3) Unarmed focus.

4) Support Focus.

Have I got it all do far?

More or less. I'm not married to unarmed damage though. I believe there are a few ways to use stunning fist with a weapon.. or am I off base with that?

Grand Lodge

Stunning Fist is really a terrible thing to focus on.

There are more things immune to stun, than sneak attack.

Also, it's Fortitude, which is the most common high save.

So, what, monk of the lotus to get it replaced? I just want to make the class fairly support oriented rather than tearing things heads off. My group isn't super optimized and I would like to help them look good.

Grand Lodge

What do you want from Monk?

Sensei monk does that fairly well actually, although not quite as well as a bard does in the "make the group look good" role.

Having said that, if you can get the GM to OK a martial artist sensei monk, you'll do very well, especially with the ki-rin style feat tree. Your dwarf monk will be hard to put down, able to fill the group in on critter weaknesses and able (via martial artists' find weakness at 4th) to smash holes in things that nothing else can smash holes in.

Grand Lodge

Well, there is the Freebooter Ranger.

Feats I'm looking at so far.

Breadth of experience
steel soul
ability focus (stunning fist)
crushing blow (turns stunning fist into a armor debuff which should avoid stun immunity)
Dodge (for crane feats later)

I picked up remove disease, restoration, and bark skin and replaced wholeness of body, slow fall, high jump, and tongue of the sun and moon. Any advice as to other Qinngong ki powers which may be better?

I was also thinking about grabbing extra performance, but I imagine that someone will say that advice is not performance.

Looks like the average fort save is around ten at even cr, so the DC 22(without gear) stunning fist to debuff armor should be a fairly consistent help to the team.

Update!

I'm going with Monk of the four winds/sensei/qinggong

Stat array is
str 10
dex 14
con 16
int 13+1 at 4
wis 20+4 at 8,12,16,20
cha 6

Feats so far
1. breadth of experience, dodge
3. steel soul
5. marid style
7. marid spirit
9. extra ki
10. improved crit (unarmed)
11. stunning fist
13. crushing blow
14. medusa's wrath
15. extra advice (if thats kosher)
17. crane style
19. crane wing

ki powers are

4. bark skin
6. remove disease
8. restoration
13. ki leech
15. punishing kick
17. strangling hair
20. perfect self

Any thoughts would be helpful. I am somewhat concerned about the resources that are required for most of this, but I don't plan on using these abilities constantly. I am also hoping that ki leech will keep my ki levels up somewhat.
