Create Pit on a 5' wide catwalk

Can you create a pit on a narrow space? its an extradimensional space. so i understand you can create it on the surface of a pirate ship, and it'll be however deep and not interfere with the ship itself. extradimensional spaces like bags of holding go inert inside the space.

but what if there's barely room on the surface for the pit? like on a 5 ft. wide catwalk? does a 10 ft. section of the catwalk become a 5ft by 10 ft. pit, with leanin ledges on adjacent catwalk sections?

does the full 10 ft. pit materialize in the air?

I ruled it created a 5x10 pit on the catwalk and didn't function in the surrounding air. but just curious what other's takes on this are. whether it needs to be cast on a surface big enough for the pit or not, or whether it should appear as a full blown pit hanging in the air.

I like your solution.

IIRC, the spell as written says it needs a flat 10'x10' space in order to cast, so RAW would say no, you can't do that.

yeah, just makes me wonder what would happen if you cast it on a tightrope. =X

Personally, I would rule that the pit would require a 10' square area of solid surface to manifest upon.

Sovereign Court

RAW you can't as the 5 foot catwalk is not a surface of sufficient size.

You create a 10-foot-by-10-foot extradimensional hole with a depth of 10 feet per two caster levels (maximum 30 feet). You must create the pit on a horizontal surface of sufficient size.
