Per the GMG

Quote:
Bestow curse can also inflict a single insanity on a foe, although in this case the insanity is also a curse.

If you use that with amnesia you've basically got not only an instant shutdown ability with a permanent duration but you can also potentially use it as the ultimate "forced redemption" tactic.

Amnesia

Quote:

AMNESIA

Type insanity; Save Will DC 20
Onset immediate
Effect –4 penalty on Will saving throws and all skill checks; loss of memory (see below)
DESCRIPTION
A character suffering from amnesia cannot remember things; his name, his skills, and his past are all equal mysteries. He can build new memories, but any memories that existed before he became an amnesiac are suppressed.

Worse, the amnesiac loses all class abilities, feats, and skill ranks for as long as his amnesia lasts. He retains his base attack bonus, base saving throw bonuses, combat maneuver bonus, combat maneuver defense, total experience points, and hit dice (and hit points), but everything else is gone until the amnesia is cured. If a character gains a class level while suffering from amnesia, he may use any abilities gained by that class level normally. If the class level he gained was of a class he already possess levels in, he gains the abilities of a 1st-level character of that class, even though he is technically of a higher level in that class. If his amnesia is later cured, he regains all the full abilities of this class, including those gained from any levels taken while he was suffering from amnesia.

Using Curse, Major you can even do this at range and impose a -5 penalty to remove it by all.

What is your Rules Question?

Do you see a rules question? I guess that's a question.

I think he wants to know if he's correct in his assertion.

Nah. Just read that quoted bit in the GMG today and went O.O. As a reaction I posted an interesting (to me) rule in the only rule forum I knew. There are no questions, per se.

(Sorry mods!)

well, it seems pretty damn harsh, so whether the intent of the rules was really to allow this seems like a decent question...

(there is a pathfinder general discussion forum as well...)

We can roll with that premise, Quandary. And, yes, it's very harsh. Imagine turning the end of the game BBEG into a pacifistic vow of silence/poverty monk with a level 5 spell.

i'm not clear what happens for race-based abilities.
it first says just class stuff goes, but then says you lose 'everything' except BAB, CMB, etc.
physical race based abilities shouldn't really be taken away
(although many class abilities can be physical, so that's debatable, why should you lose those because you have amnesia?),
but there are race-based non-physical abilities (su, etc), what about those? are those 'everything'?

HEY, now it's a real rules question thread!

To get even more rulesy does the will save apply for the insanity also or does the save for bestow curse also cover the save for the insanity? For all insanities does the onset period apply or are they all effectively immediate?

Buri, you rock; love this idea. Add to Glyph of Warding...

So, when someone asks where the rules question is, in the thread posted in the Rule Questions Forum, you're shocked?

You have mostly likely been powergaming longer than me Ravingdork.
