Do the familiars not listed in the Core Rules require the Improved Familiar feat?

I have a player that wanted a dinosaur from the Bestiary as his Wizard's familiar. It is listed as available to be a familiar. However, it is not on the Core Rulebook list. Does that mean he must take the Improved Familiar feat to acquire any familiar from the Bestiaries? If so where can I find what level he may gain this particular Familiar?

The creature description will state if you need improved familiar feat (and if so its alignment/level restrictions) or not. The Compsognathus (presumably the dinosaur in question) does not require improved familiar.
