I think the most important thing for a wizard is his spell selection and how he uses them.
Pick one of the following scholl specializations: Conjuration, Transmutation or Divination.
Feats: Toughness, Improved Initiative, Great Fortitude, item creation (rods & wondrous items), probably quicken spell, later: Spell Penetration (+greater) and so forth...
