Hey guys,
I took Misfortune and Cackle at level 1 with Extra Hex. Do you think I should take Evil Eye or Slumber at level 2?
I'll also be getting two new level 1 spells. Right now I have the following:
beguiling gift
cure light wounds
ear-piercing scream
enlarge person
ill omen
mage armor
Which two do you think would go well with those six?
FYI my witch is a pretty standard debuffer.
Thanks,
m

I've recently been discovering the wonder that is the Witch class and I absolutely reccomend Slumber.
There is no debuff more powerful than a foe unable to act, be it through death or condition... moreover, when a foe is asleep they are helpless, meaning that you can coups de grace at your liesure. Pick yourself up a scythe (that you don't even need profeciency in), maybe the Power Attack feat if your STR is high enough and read up on the CdG rules so that you understand how easy it is to dispatch even an otherwise deadly foe who's under the effect of your Slumber Hex.
its not something I'd build an entire character around, but it is most definitely a bullet you want to have in your gun... so to speak.

Honestly, I find a character's spell list is a highly personal thing. It depends a lot on what your DM is sending at you, what you find you're missing most of the time, and what kind of character you're playing.
It's safe to say that grabbing two new useful debuffs probably couldn't hurt, but you may want to grab other kinds of spells, instead, in order to give yourself a little more flexibility.

Interesting thoughts. What about the spells?

Specifically for level 2 it'll be a matter of personal taste and whatever you might feel you've been lacking thus far, but I reccomend working towards Spell Perfection and selecting a school to Focus on - perhaps Enchantment or Conjuration for summoning creatures and let your feat needs lead the way... personally, I'm leaning towards a lot of Necromancy spells, specificially False Life, Blindness/Deafness and Suffocation which I will robably be 'perfecting'.

I find the Slumber hex is so powerful that you'll never end up using anything else.
So I suggest Evil Eye, because it's strong, but not THE ONLY THING I EVER DO strong.
I would hold off on Evil Eye until 8th level at least since you already have a debuff Hex. I'd probably either go with Fortune (so you can maintain both Fortune and Misfortune at the same time with Cackle or Healing because hey - its free healing for every party member, every day.
For me, I'm looking at taking Hexes in the following order:
1st - Slumber
2nd - Healing
4th - Misfortune
6th - Cackle
8th - Evil Eye
10th - Retribution
12th - Greater Healing
14th - Hag's Eye
16th - Speak in Dreams
18th - Death Curse
20th - Life Giver

By no means am I saying you're wrong, Damo (it's a lot of personal preference and such, after all!) but when I was DMing for my friend's Witch, who had the Evil Eye hex, I was nearly floored at how hard it made life for my poor minions! He would pick a target and just start making it a non-threat. I was so impressed that I wanted to make a Witch of my own! :)

I'm not knocking the Evil Eye at all - love the flavor, and each has a time when their benefit shines brightest, but think about it:
The Evil Eye until 8th level reduces attack, AC OR saves by -2, eventually upping to -4. Meanwhile Misfortune forces the worst of two rolls for every attack and every saving throw - statistically speaking you're much more likely to get a bigger swing than -4 and certainly more than -2 under those conditions.
The biggest benefit I see from Evil Eye is the fact that it lasts at least a round no matter what, meaning you have a chance to drop someone's saves on one round and then cast that save-or-suck the second.

Just wanted to throw this out there - Evil Eye is a definite take by level 8 because it can stack with itself... sorta. With judicious use of Cackle, you can layer on Saving Throw, AC and Attack debuffs on the same target indefinitely.
-4 AC might not be that big of a deal, but -4 AC, -4 Attack penalty and -4 Saves absolutely is.
