Gaining Feats As You Level

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Wasn't quite sure where to put this, but I think it fits best here.

Once you gain an appropriate level(1, 3, etc, etc.), and you obtain a feat, do you NEED to select it as soon as you level, or can you hold off until you meet the prerequisites otherwise.

Example:

I have a level 1 Human Inquisitor. As such, I gain two feats(One for being level 1, one for being Human). The feats I want are Power Attack and Weapon Focus - Greatsword. Unfortunately, I do not possess one of the prerequisites of Base Attack Bonus +1. Can I either take said feats and do not gain the bonus until level 2, or can I "hold" the feats until level 2 and expend them then?

When you level up, you gain a feat. That's a thing that happens when you level. You can't hold feat slots open until later.

So I MUST qualify for the feat at that level no exceptions, or can I gain said feat, but not the bonuses until I meet the requisites?

Yes, that generally means characters need to make level 7 before getting leadership...I house ruled it to 5.

Just wanted to double check that. I had to roll a quick character for a beginner's game(joined for fun, just getting back in DnD), and I had to help 2 others with their characters, and neglected my own feats. Thanks guys.

if you can obtain a prereq at the same time you qualify for a feat then you can take them at the same time, for instance a player taking their 1st fighter level at on odd level can take both dodge and mobility at the same time

but unless you have all the prereqs either at the same time or before you qualify for the feat, then you are ineligible and cannot take it
