Inquisitor truth feats from UM

Rules Questions

Have a couple of questions about feats from Ultimate Magic that apply to inquisitors. They seem to enhance inquisitor class features, but as feats, their interaction with other spells and magical effects seems strange.

Benefit: Once per day as a free action, you can think back about a single statement you heard in the last day and determine if it was a lie. This acts like the discern lies spell, but instead of affecting a creature, it affects a single statement a creature has made. For example, if the king told you, "My daughter is in the monster's dungeon" before you left to find her, as long as the king said that to you within the past day, you can use this feat to determine whether or not the king deliberately and knowingly lied to you when he made that statement.

In this example: does the king get a will save? If so, is it retroactive? What happens if the king was a bard who had glibness on when he made the statement, but not when you use the feat -- do you need a caster level check, or not? If the king had a bonus or penalty to will saves at the time, does he apply that when you use this feat? What if you use this after the king is dead?

Benefit: When using your detect alignment class feature, you may spend 3 rounds studying a creature within 60 feet. You cannot take any other actions while doing this. After that time has passed, you learn the alignment of the creature.

Do normal defenses against alignment detection, e.g. ring of mind shielding, undetectable alignment work against this feat?

You'll note that the target affected isn't the king. It's the king's statement. So if the king isn't affected, he doesn't get a will save.

Sure. Nothing says otherwise.

So, to be clear -- if I have this feat, and you lie to me, I can wait one round, then use this feat to find out whether you told me the truth -- no save, no caster level check, no SR? A 5th level inquisitor gets to make the master spy cry once per day?

I think RAW, yes.

The ability is written so that the fluff gets in the way of the mechanics, so RAI is anyone's guess.

Well yea...but then you have to be careful on what you use that on...if a MS tells you multiple things then choosing the correct one would be nice...choosing the wrong one may not help you

Your GM may also play with the MS by making him say things in a round-a-bout way so that its technically not a lie...I remember in one of the shrek movies, Pinocchio was "lying" to someone but was actually telling the truth in a funny and confusing way to make it seem that he was actually answering the question. Don't remember which one though...

MS: "There is a great treasure. It's hidden in a secret castle. The location is on this map. The location of any traps is on the back of the map. Beware...there be a mighty red dragon that guards it. He falls asleep at the slightest bit of music you play though."

So you get to see if any ONE of those statements is a lie...and it doesn't say you get the truth...just that you know its a lie...so pick one of the above and I will tell you if it were a lie (and I'll give the truth, just so you know what you are really in for)
