Rules Clarification

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

I'm requesting a rules clarification for the Feat "Reckless Aim". Reckless Aim allows you to take a -1 to your AC for a turn to provide a +2 competence bonus on all your attacks until the beginning of your next turn. The other portion is that on a natural 1, you automatically hit an adjacent threat to your intended target (read: one of your allies gets shot).

The question I have is: Using Reckless Aim with a firearm, a natural 1 (normally) results in a misfire, which is an automatic miss. Does an ally take the hit (if applicable) and the weapon gains the "broken" condition, or does the misfire happen normally?

According to the misfire rules "If the natural result of your attack roll falls within a firearm's misfire value, that shot misses, even if you would have otherwise hit the target."

It seams to me under RAW you would still misfire. It says nothing about hitting your target or a different target otherwise. It could even be argued that you would not hit an "adjacent threat to your intended target" since it states ". . . even if you would have otherwise hit the target."

I would expect table variation on the ruling.

1) This is a Pathfinder rules question, not a PFS rules question.

2) Since a 1 automatically misses the target anyhow, I would, as a GM, rule that the misfired bullet hits an adjacent threat, just as per the feat write-up, and that, as normal, the firearm gains the broken condition, or, if already broken, explodes, as normal.

Things to remember:
It's only a normal hit, not a critical hit, so, while painful, it won't, usually, be enough to finalize your ally. If you are using it when your ally is that badly damaged already, or at a low enough level that one hit can be fatal, there are other things to worry about; and you should seriously consider using your reroll (I would hope you would consider having something that grants a free reroll de rigueur if you take this feat).

And, as ever in PFS, when something you do can cause injury to an ally, you need to consult with your allies before doing so.

To paraphrase one of the VOs:
Explore. Cooperate. Report. Don't Be a Jerk.
