Why do people ask why,

- When they really mean, "I think you are wrong?"

- When they don't really want to hear the answer?

- When they know it will just start a multipage flamewar that gets a bunch of posts removed and then gets locked without deciding anything?

- ....

Sometimes it's a rhetorical question. Sometimes it's so they can learn the position of those who oppose them to pick that position apart with arguement (or mischaracterize that position into a strawman that they can pick apart). Or it's a troll.


Socrates was famous for that. He would claim "I know nothing" and ask questions that would completely dismantle the other person's position.

Of course, most people on the internet are no Socrates. But maybe some people think they are.
