Ideas to Boost the Non-Casting Martials

Hey guys,

I'm planning on implementing these boosts to the non-casting core classes to see if it helps give more opportunities for these classes to shine and might make them more appealing to my group.

These abilities would be granted at first level unless stated otherwise.

Thoughts and feedback are both welcome and encouraged!

Monk
At 5th level, a monk may move an additional 5 feet when taking a five-foot step. This bonus increases by an additional five feet at 10th level and every five levels thereafter.

Fighter
As a standard action a fighter may perform a combat maneuver check against an opponent. If successful, the fighter deals damage to the creature equal to twice his class level. Treat this damage as if it were dealt by a weapon the fighter carries in either hand for the purposes of damage type and bypassing damage reduction.

In addition, a fighter reduces the penalty he takes to his attack rolls when making called shots by 1 (to a minimum of 0). At 4th level, the penalty reduction increases to 2 and increases by an additional point every two levels thereafter.

Barbarian
While raging, a barbarian’s attacks ignore a number of points of hardness and damage reduction equal to her class level.

Oops, I just realized. For the fighter, it should just say "combat maneuver" and not "check". The intent is that the fighter can perform a maneuver and still deal some damage.

What about Rogues, Cavaliers, Samurai, Gunslingers, and Ninja?

I think you're onto something with the monk. The big obstacle they face is that they're geared for movement/skirmishing, but their flurry of blows doesn't work with moving at all.

The big thing though with the martials is not so much raw power though as it is with versatility. I was thinking more along the lines of things thata would make them more versatile. Like maybe making the latest bonus feat a fighter got a "virtual feat", something he could switch out daily, much like an inquisitor's bonus teamwork feats.

Scarab Sages

Monks get full BAB.

When a character’s BAB reaches +13, they can make an extra attack immediately if they attack as a standard action (including using various feats that are a special attack that requires a standard action such as cleave, vital strike, etc.). If the character possesses the Doublestrike ability, he may use it twice as a standard action instead.

Oh yeah, rogues. (I'm focusing on just the core non-casters at the moment.)

Maybe something where a rogue can deal sneak attack damage on attacks of opportunity and make Stealth checks to remain hidden after sneak attacking from cover or concealment?

It's for this reason I've occasionally considered the idea of granting an additional feat at every point of BAB, rather than every 2nd level after first. Mages keep the same feat progression, while everybody else gets a little pick me up. (Might be too much pick me up for Clerics and Druids, but they've always been tiered a fraction under mages so... I'm not 100% sure whether they would need to be excluded from this.)

There are a lot of feats out there that allow diversification into various different options, especially if one opens up 3.5 stuff and 3rd party material.

It's no huge upgrade, but in my opinion it would help.

(Also, yes for the love of all that is holy give monks real full BAB, and turn the 'swift action ki point extra attack' into a simple swift action, as opposed to something that must be taken as part of a full attack.)
