Double Weapon, two weapon fighting, iterative attacks

Rules Questions

Question, what are the to hit and damage bonuses for a 6th level barbarian while using two weapon fighting with a double weapon during a full round attack.

Example stats: Barbarian swings a medium sized Gnome Hook Hammer with a Strength of 18 and a regularly calculated to hit of +10 to attack(+4 Strength, +6 BAB)

What are the to attack modifiers and how much damage gets added to each swing during a full round attack?

Is it +8/+3(1d8+6), +8(1d8+6)?

Is it +8/+3(1d8+4), +8(1d8+2)?

Or something completely different?

For this explanation, "normal" attack will be used for your main hand attacks and "extra" attack will be used for your off hand attacks. (since you technically don't have a MH and OH when using a double weapon)

if you are using a double weapon as a double weapon and not just using one side of it 2 handed then you only get 1.0xSTR on damage for your "normal" attacks and 0.5xSTR on the "extra" attack you get from TWF

The penalties incurred from using a double weapon are as if you were fighting with a light weapon in your off hand, so if you have TWF as a feat then you take a -2 on your "normal" attacks and -2 on your "extra" attacks

so your attack progression if you were full attacking would be:

Gnome Hooked Hammer +8/+3 (1d8+4), +8 (1d6+2)

REMEMBER that each side of the weapon has a different damage die...one side is 1d8 the other is 1d6 unlike the Two-Bladed Sword that is 1d8/1d8

+8/+3 1d8+4,+8 1d8+2

Though, normally, I wouldn't write it out that way.

Edit: I didn't actually look at the Hook Hammer to see what the damages were, so yeah, it's 1d6 on the second hit.

I'll presume you meant using the TWF feat (or equivalent) since you can TWF without the feat, just with ridiculously high penalties (something you shouldn't do... ever). By the commonly accepted model, you'd attack as follows:

Main-hand: +8 to hit, 1d8+4 / +3 to hit, 1d8+4
Off-hand: +8 to hit, 1d6+2

Your Off-hand attack can come at any point in the sequence; first, last, or in the middle. The only limitation is that each hand has to perform attacks in order of decreasing bonus. So if you had, for the sake of example, two off-hand attacks and two main-hand attacks, you could do the following combinations:

MH +8/MH +3/OH +8/OH +3
MH +8/OH +8/MH +3/OH +3
MH +8/OH +8/OH +3/MH +3
OH +8/MH +8/MH +3/OH +3
OH +8/MH +8/OH +3/MH +3
OH +8/OH +3/MH +8/MH +3

There's a minority school of thought that says that a Double weapon is still a 2-h weapon by RAW and the rules only specify that TWF attack penalties (the -2/-2) apply. Off-hand attacks are always done at half strength regardless, but it's ambiguous whether the main-hand attack qualifies for 1.5x strength due to it being a 2-h weapon or if the writing is unclear and RAI is for it to be treated completely as a 1-h weapon and light weapon in calculating both attack penalties and strength modifiers. If you want fewer objections, stick with the standard model. But be aware of the alternative readings.

When you're using two-weapon fighting:

* You get an additional attack with your off hand when you take a full attack action
* Both your primary and your secondary attacks are at -2
* Your main hand gets full STR bonus to damage (one handed STR bonus)
* Your off hand gets 1/2 STR bonus to damage.

Gnome hooked hammer used as a double weapon does 1d8 in the main hand and 1d6 in the off hand.

So starting one level back from 6 (so we can see how the iterative attack fits in), with +9 to attack (+4 STR and +5 BAB), it's
MH: +7 (1d8+4), OH: +7 (1d6+2)

At level 6, with +10 to attack (+4 STR and +6 BAB), you can have either:
Two handed: +10 (1d8+6), +5 (1d8+6)
Double weapon: MH +8 (1d8+4), OH +8 (1d6+2), MH +3 (1d8 +4)

Does that help?

Thanks all.
