Does this sound possible?

Silver Crusade

I was playing a scenario last night with a ranger. He was either level 3 or 4, I honestly can't remember.

What didn't seem possible to me is that at that level, he already had something like +7 to hit AND +7 (or maybe even +8) to his 1d8 damage with his composite longbow.

Playing as a PFS ranger, does that sound possible considering a character that has played 9 or 10 scenarios?

Only feats I know he had are Point-blank Shot and Precise Shot. I'm not even certain what race he was.

When I asked him how he got +8 to his damage at level 3, his response was, "I don't know. I put my numbers in and HeroLab tells me what to add to my rolls."

18 Dex. 3 or 4 BAB. That's +7 or +8 to hit right there. As far as damage goes, figure whatever his strength bonus on his composite bow, plus Point-blank Shot, plus favored enemy, if he was fighting his favored enemy.

Depending on Race, I'd imagine he has maybe a 14 or 16 at best. So 2 or 3 for Strength. 1 more for PBS. He might have Deadly Aim. Which if he's level 3 will give him a +2 to damage, level 4 will give him a +4. So it is definitely possible.

1. Were you fighting his favored enemy?

2.How high is his Dex and STR?

3. Is he using a Composite Bow?

4. Is the Bow enchanted?

Without more information I can't tell you IF he is doing something illegal or not :)

Also, I would talk to your GM about the whole "HeroLab says" thing...the player needs to know exactly how each of their abilities, feats, and class features add or subtract from their attacks

Doggan I'm sure in your first line saying "18 Dex. 3 or 4 BAB. That's +7 or +8 to damage right there." that by "damage" you meant "attack" right :) I'm doing this first before some rule nazi jumps on you for saying that line lol

Indeed, I did mean to hit. Edited and changed.

Deadly Aim also.

Also, Herolab *rollseyes*

Quick assumptions
level 4
16 str
18 dex
feats - point blank shot, precise shot, deadly aim

To hit - +4 level, +4 dex, +1 point blank shot, +1 magical weapon, -2 deadly aim
damage - +3 str, +1 point blank shot, +4 deadly aim, +1 magical weapon

+8 to hit, +9 to damage

Very possible and not even a favored enemy.

I like hero lab and it is a powerful tool, but it is no excuse for not knowing your character.

Silver Crusade

I'm pretty sure he was level 3 not 4 the more I think about it. We were fighting goblins, so I guess it's possible he was getting a favored enemy bonus.

I didn't get into specifics with him and I too kind of just said "ok whatever" when he said the HeroLab thing.

The attack bonus actually seems kinda average. The damage seems pretty high. That might be an indication right there that he was using deadly aim.

Silver Crusade

How much of a bonus does Deadly Aim give you?

Even at level 3 the numbers don't seem far off.

Str 15
Dex 18
feats - point blank shot, precise shot, deadly aim

To hit - +3 BAB, +4 Dex, +1 point blank shot, +1 magical weapon, -1 deadly aim

damage - +2 str, +1 point blank shot, +2 deadly aim, +1 magical weapon

+8 to hit, +6 to damage. Again no favored enemy

Again, this is a quick rundown of what the numbers could possibly look like, without a character sheet it's difficult to parse exactly.

Deadly Aim:
Prerequisites: Dex 13, base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: You can choose to take a –1 penalty on all ranged attack rolls to gain a +2 bonus on all ranged damage rolls. When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every +4 thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the bonus to damage increases by +2. You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.

Power attack and Deadly Aim function similarly.

Liberty's Edge

Herolabs, while not infallible, is an excellent tool. It still requires a human element to verify that everything is presented properly.

A couple of sayings from my line of work are appropriate here:

"Shit in = shit out."
"Trust, but verify."

Sounds like its all good to me...especially if you add in Deadly Aim. Archers can dish out the damage man, they don't have to move in order to get their full attacks most of the time, they get to use Rapid Shot and Manyshot, and spells like Gravity Bow are amazing. Because they don't usually have to move much for full attacks their DPR can be great. Make sure your GM is taking cover into account, a lot of people misunderstand or misread the rules about cover and concealment and when they are in effect.

Again make sure your GM gets more of a reason from here other than "HeroLab says so". Not that I don't think HeroLab isn't a very useful tool to use...but during a combat spells from enemies and other effects can cause your bonuses to hit and even damage to change so the player needs to be able to run with the flow and not have to stop the game to read his abilities.

Man this is making me want to redo my archer inquisitor before I play as a level 2 and turn it into a longbow using fighter. The inquisitor makes a decent archer and has some utility, but man I would love to pump out that kind of damage.

@Bigdaddyjug you might want to look at the archer fighter archetype...they get some fun stuff like Trick Shot, allowing them to do certain combat maneuvers using their bow

Silver Crusade

Yeah this is my first character ever. I'm using it in PFS. It sated as a pregen ninja. Then I rolled my own ninja. Then I changed it to an inquisitor.

I got to level 2 last night and now I'm thinking I should be a fighter for all the feats and damage possibilities with ranged weapons.
