Ways to immediately wake from sleep

Advice

I just picked up a Decoy ring, which can trigger some nice effects when you withdraw or go unconscious. I am looking for ways to trigger it at a distance from people if need be (i.e. go unconscious) but suffer minimal side effects from it. So I think I am close to something but not sure of the legality. Logically it seems good, but RAW I don't know if it would fly.

If I polypurpose pancea myself, I can go to sleep immediately for an hour or until woken. So I am thinking I would like to either line my outfit with caltrops or wear armor spikes inside out. This way, when I fall asleep and hit the ground I will take some minimal damage but wake myself up.

Is this legitimate? Is there some better way to accomplish this goal? I am using a sorcerer so I do not have a familiar.

It would seem like I could draw caltrops (move), drop in my square (free), cast pancea (standard), fall on them (free), take one damage and wake up. But I can't find anything that talks about falling into a square with them. Could I drop them beside me and five foot step into them as I cast? Admittedly I have never used caltrops before, but it seems like I should be able to fall into them for damage.

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve. Are you

a) trying to trigger the ring without withdrawing or going unconscious?
b) trying to make some way that you'll automatically wake up if, say, someone casts Sleep on you?

If it's (a) I'd ask a friendly alchemist to knock up a potion that'll knock you out for 1 round only. You can voluntarily fail your save. There's obviously a DM call in this but as you've got a 12000gp ring I expect you can afford a few gp for some cantrip-level potions.

I wouldn't mess about with caltrops. You might accidentally read on one when you wake up; half move might not be good in the heat of battle.

Mainly A, but if it helps with B also that doesn't hurt.

What potion only knocks you out for 1 round?

lining your clothes with caltrops seems like a bad idea... dont get tripped...

They don't do much damage, if something is tripping me I am in a lot more trouble than 1 damage. I have found this character can tear things up at a distance but if he starts getting targeted he drops pretty quick. Hence the proactive defense I am trying to accomplish with the ring.

If colds and not being a mouth breather have taught me nothing else, it is that one of the "best" ways to wake up and be immediately alert is suffocation. When a cold is in full swing my nose get stuffed up and I go from sound asleep to wide awake (and very tired) in a fraction of a second. Perhaps nose plugs and a gag which shuts off air supply unless you are standing up is the way to go.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Carry a newborn baby in your backpack. If my theory is correct, the infant will begin to howl incessantly the very instant you fall asleep thus rousing you to a state of full awareness.

You probably won't even have time to fall prone.

While I would agree with you, I would like to find something RAW. This is a PFS character so it will likely see several DMs. I would hate to see one say "you have taken some pretty elaborate steps to kill yourself with sleep apnea."

hahaaha

Actually this might be on to something. My charm lasts quite a while now, I can bring a commoner with me whose job it is to simply wake me up.

I guess I could just give this person a knife and tell them to constantly threaten me. Then I could always withdraw. This, for some reason, seems silly to me where falling on my own caltrops does not......go figure.

Cast unseen servant. Have it shake you every 6 seconds. On second thought, this is probably not legal since waking another is an Aid Another action and Unseen servant can't make an attack roll. Some GMs may let it slide.

20 lbs of force does seem like enough to wake someone, but you are right that a DM may X it.

How much force would it take to bust a vial of acid? If just dropping it would do the trick, that is an easy one damage.

SLIGHT CHANGE OF DESIRE

I just managed a faerie dragon that can always act in the surprise round. So my new desire is to find a way to have him make me unconscious with a standard action. I am not so worried about the waking up anymore since he can do it on the next round. Any ideas here? I was thinking maybe the pancea spell with the familiar spell feat, but I almost think that the familiar spell makes the familiar the caster and therefore must be the target. Suggestions very welcome.

Uh, maybe I am missing something, but it seems rather excessive to make up weird combos for becoming helpless...

You can trigger the ring by taking a withdraw action. You spend a full-round action, but since you intend to cast a spell to go to sleep, that action is spend anyway. And you avoid going prone from sleeping, you avoid a potential AoO if an enemy is adjacent. And you get a double-move to place your self wherever you want.

I have had some people say you can withdraw any time and some say that you must be threatened in melee. I guess I could just be trying to get clarification on that aspect, but without having to spend resources or be threatened I feel this proactive use of the ring could be a bit broken so I try not to push it.

if you have riddywipple you don't really need the ring anymore. he can get you out of trouble by himself, by just using his illusion spell to create a wall around you with an opening where you can walk out without getting attacked. but he can cast sleep if necessary (and with the right equipment)

I don't know that I am prepared to rely on just his low level illusion full time, but you are right that in most cases it should buy me enough time to act on my own. This character is a master manipulator but drops so damn quick when targeted that I am trying to keep him invisible almost constantly now.

Ygol-hath's (Riddywipple was a little b+%+$ that almost killed me, so after making him bind himself to me I stripped him of his former identity :P ) sleep can't hit me because my HD is too high.

you don't get a save vs an illusion until you get a chance to interact with it somehow, which requires an action of some sort. so his illusion is guaranteed to save you if you move right after he casts it. anyone who would be adjacent to you would just see a wall pop up, and not get a save until they get a chance to poke it (or something).

i use riddywipple to do this all the time for my allies.

buying him pages of spell knowledge is highly recommended, imo. having him able to cast feather fall and liberating command can save lives.
