Gear and Numbers

One thing I love about the tabletop game that I have never seen in a mmo is that your gear doesn't really have a whole lot to do with your PC. I mean yes, it's hard to power attack without your trusty long sword, but i hate that Mr.Robo dictates what I would be doing for my next 5-10 hrs on WOW. All for arbitrary higher numbers, I could not even tell you the differences that the next +25 to my mastery meant to my ability to heal but i know if i did not have it then i would not be able to do raids or any other end game stuff.
I know there are all kinds of +s to this and that in pathfinder but the numbers we use are meaningful +1 moral bonus from inspire courage gives me a 5% better chance to hit the kobold and that same +1 changes my average damage to my short sword from 3.5 to 4.5 and that all every calculable with out a super computer

I all so fill like keeping it this way will make the loot-able pc thing much more fun, if having my body looted meant losing 5+hrs of the same crap raid just to get the one drop so that I do another raid for 5+ hrs to move up and some one looted of me I would quit right there no questions asked.

(wow , I am up to one rant a day ....)

That's why I bailed on Wow actually. Way back when the level cap was level 60 I maxed out and looked at all the other characters that were continually raiding, all for these pieces of gear that added a few extra +'s to a score. But what was that score for? PvP, arena style, a mass mosch pit that just wasn't fun to me at all.

It's why I'm on board with PFO. The gear grubbing, trying to complete another set of armor, facing yet another 5 hour raid are things I won't miss. I love the idea that gear will be player made, and if I lose a piece, I'll have another in the bank to replace it, all I'm out is some material which I can replace easily.

The reason I never even tried WoW is I used to watch a good friend who was unemployed at the time running characters up to level 60 in 48 hours continuous play and selling them on ebay. It really looked boring.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I really dislike MMOs that are gear-centric. I left WOW after 8 months when I saw the gear treadmill Blizzard was passing off as an expansion and new content. Can't believe people bought into that crap, but they did.

Over these many years I have run into the supposed "hardcore" pvpers, but they were only hardcore until players started asking the Devs to put full player looting into the PvP. The hardcore suddenly became very whinny and as soft as any care bear.

EvE Online really does have the best balance of gear, pvp and death penalty I have seen in any MMO over the past 10 years or do.
