I read a thread, can't remember where, about explorers having cartography skills and actually creating their own maps of the world, that could then be traded.
Another aspect of exploration I would like to see is discovering rare materials, flora, fauna, artifacts (non magic), etc..
These could be then be collected, used to decorate player housing, placed in museums, sold on the market, etc.
[Note: In case you were wondering, PFO is not all about banditry for me, I'm here for everything PFO will have to offer.]

I like very much this idea. Those rare objects could also lead to interesting PvE plots, secret info on dungeons, discovery of ancient secrets (an ancient forgotten spell? an old map hidden inside an idol? An old recipe for an unknown herbal medicine or alchemical formulation?).
That could be a way to add new stuff in the game even skills, spells, recipes etc.

Yes! the 3 things I most want to do are defeat dungeons, have meaningful exploration, and be a bandit/merc.
In regards to this thred, I like the rare materials and items ideas. It goes along with the whole MEANINGFUL EXPLORATION thing I mentioned.
For instance I could see random treasure maps (could be to loot, could be a rare resource that is only findable with a map). I could also see extremely rare super powered scrolls of destruction(but these would not be common at all, like maybe 1 or 2 only ever active in the world at one time). Smart merchants would sell it for a prety penny, smart Settlements would save it for when the chips were down in a big battle.
It could even be just an ancient tome of lore, nice for collectors and librarians.

Here's Ryan's take on maps.
From Cartography:
I would really like there to be a huge system for map manipulation. So rather than selling a map to another person, you'd sell them information that you've gathered and it would appear on their map. Your character's map would be a way of keeping a whole lot of information organized.

That sounds really nice. I wonder how that would work if we are given the ability to write on scrolls and in books? Being able to sell a map to someone would have MANY uses. Player quests, information such as resource locations, intelligence like where bandit lairs are, or where enemy positions are during times of war.
With the SAD tag, a number of bandit groups will be out "greeting" caravans. Information is very valuable. Being able to sell a merchant a map showing 'safe' routes around bandits would be a money making operation ;).

not to mention selling information on gold mine or a witchs hut. possible player made settlements. you may sonder though an area and find nothin but 3 months later someone else can walk through and find several strang things.
this acutally reminds me of a whiel back when we used to run privet server games. the DMs would control pc or monsters and run around giving quests or taoilred items of little or no use but always hilarious and fun. the one I remeber most was (bobs spoon of evereat) it was supposted to be cursed and a duke could not stop eating. when it was finnaly dispelled we carried the once evil spoon as a good luck charm. ocasionally still useing it to eat. one of our campfire saying was: You did not mix the spoons again did you?

I REALLY hope this becomes a reality.
