Wiz3 / rog3 / at2 planning some larceny. How would you do it?

Advice

I'm playing the above character in a game. I've expressed some interest in a solo side quest to commit some larceny. I'll post the character I necessary, but the high points are 3rd level spells, monkey familiar, +13 sleight of hand, +14 perception, +13 stealth, +18 disguise (with hat of disguise). Boots of levitation and a couple of other tricks.

Essentially I'm planning a "foolproof" strategy to at minimum evade capture. Ideally to also steal a few expensive things.

My idea so far is to put on a mundane disguise that hides all my features and ideally makes me look as different from myself as possible. Taking 20 with a MW disguise kit I can get that to 30.
Then use the hat of disguise to give myself a different look over the mundane one. The mundane one is to cover my identity should the magic one be breached somehow.

Then I'm going to blend with and case/scout some of the parts of town where the wealthy frequent. Using detect magic, perception, and appraisal. I'll also send the monkey to solo scout using my ranks of appraise and perception. He'll have the advantage of climbing around to look into windows and the birds eye view. I'm looking for small expensive things. I'm going for quality, not quantity. Ideally some foolish young noble is carrying around an expensive magic trinket.

Then I'll appear to be one of the more frameable races like a bugbear or halfling to ranged letharian the target possession from them.

If its a high value target I may even cause a distraction first with something like mad monkeys. In the chaos make my move and get away.

I'm immediately putting anything stolen in a bag of holding so that its on another plane. That'll stop most tracking magic. Even if the tracking magic crosses planar boundaries the item will technically be on the astral plane.

Thoughts or additional ideas?

Silver Crusade

What happens if the item has dimensional anchor on it?

The "young noble" may not be high levels, but young nobles have lots of money and can pay for magical services (i.e. pay npcs for spells, hire adventurers to track you down).

As a GM, this is my take on this: If you trying supplement your income, or just get an item or two, I am going to let you get away with some minor stuff. If you make a habit of it, their are several paths the GM might take:

Are you a member of the local thief's guild? If not, they might start coming around to collect their "dues". You might tick off a rogue who already had "marked" your young noble. The young nobles "daddy" is a high level npc who starts looking for you. All great plot devices for further adventures....

Of course, there is always a powerful wizard who needs a burglar adventure hook...

Things, is as a GM, I have learned that if you have a player playing a rogue, you have to let them play out "rogue" activities once in a while, otherwise, why did i play a rogue?

I'd it's dimensional anchored then I'm probably not going to get it in the first place. I'll do

My best to avoid schrodingers noble.

Spells are expensive. Plus the NPC doesn't know exactly what happened so he may pay for a few "cheap" spells with no result. That reminds me I need to inset in a lead lined box. The goal is to not get caught. To that end I'll not be blatant about anything. Ideally they won't know it's gone until I've long since disappeared with it.

Part of this exercise is to think of ways to fool all but the most powerful magics. My character is a caster and has enough spell craft to take some of this into consideration.

I hate the autocorrect on my phone sometimes. I hope you can read between the typos.

I thought this thread would be more popular. *shrug*

With 3rd level spells minor stealing shouldnt be an issue.. Invisibilty is obviously key and since pickpocketing etc isnt an attack roll i wouldnt think u would become visible.. Another spell that could be really strong for this is gaseous form.. Go gaseous, enter home threw crack, go back corpreal and lift valuables and return to gaseous levaing house threw same cracks and float off into the distance.. You also have access to none detection, shrink item, clairaudience/voyance as 3rd level spells too, all of which could be really useful for a theif.. I would suggest locating a fence to sell stolen objects before u actually steal anything, so your not looking for one after while in possession of stolen goods..

Dm determined that picking a pocket makes you visible. Though in this case it worked to my benefit. All good ideas though.

3rd level spells have a couple good ones for stealing. Dispel Magic is probably one of the best because on any target worth stealing they will have magical protections. Heroism is also a great spell as it gives you a +2 on all attack rolls, saves and skills and last 10 min. per level. The skill bonus is probably more important in this case as you have a ton of skills you will be using including perception. Beast Shape allows you to transform into a small animal. Seek thoughts will be useful in the planning stage.

Alter self actually changes you into a different creature instead of just giving you a bonus on disguise. Misdirection is almost a must have in this case. Obscure Object is going to be useful for after you have your loot. Rope Trick is also good for a temporary hiding place or a base to operate from.

Blend will not only give you a +4 stealth but allow to make them without having cover or concealment. Expeditious Retreat will give you a +30 bonus to your movement which in conjunction with Blend allows some very fast stealth without concealment or cover. Reduce person not only makes it easier to get places but gives you a bonus on stealth. Magic Aura cast on all your magic items a few days before will make it hard for you to be spotted by detect magic.

Illusions of any sort are going to be very useful and versatile.

I did not bother listing the completely obvious like invisibility and such.
