Hero's Defiance

Do you HAVE to use Hero's defiance with the condition of an attack that would bring you down to below 0. Or can you use it to heal as an immediate action?

From reading the spell, the definition certainly sounds like the immediate action can only be taken on the condition of something that would reduce you to zero or negative hitpoints.

I don't believe you can use it simply to turn, say, your level 4 2D6 Lay on Hands swift action into a 3D6 immediate action at any other moment.

You can't use it under any circumstances but those described in the spell's text. It's pretty clear.
