Do magical items lose ALL of their powers when sharing item slots?

If you wear more magical items then you have item slots, some of them stop functioning. For example, if I am wearing a +5 armored coat and +1 breastplate of invulnerability, the armored coat's magical properties cease to function since it's the outer armor (was put on second) and I have only one magical armor slot.

But what if someone tries to sunder my armored coat? It is still considered a +5 suit of armor for the purposes of hardness and hit points, isn't it? It doesn't become nonmagical just because I'm wearing it, I simply derive no magical benefit or bonuses from it. Right?

If you put your +5 suit of armor on the floor and try to sunder it, does it cease to function as a +5 suit of armor just because you are not wearing it?
