Fail by 5 or more? maybe not...

I was thinking over the fail by 5 or more rules. I don't see any feats or abilities to mod that, so I was thinking of a few ways to modify that.

One way are feats that add a static number to a failure range, here is an idea for failing a disable device check by up to 8:

Daily Punch 1-18-13

Another idea is adding your ability modifier to the failure range, here is an idea for failing a climb check by up to 5 + str mod:

Daily Punch 1-23-13

I have two comments on this:

1.) If you go for the addition of a static number, it needs to be bigger. As it stands, that Disable Device feat is strictly inferior to Skill Focus: Disable Device.

2.) Anything that puts the tracking of the fact that you have a feat on the DM makes me nervous and the more subtle it is, the more nervous I get.

My suggestion: make it foolproof. If that's too powerful, make it so you can't disarm the trap that you would have tripped (or increase the DC by 5-10 to achieve effectively the same results). I like the idea of the feat making you more cautious instead of flat-out better, but I think a straight ability is both more appropriate power-wise and easier to adjudicate.

My goal here was to add make people who already skill monkeys get a better bonus then those who were not. I figured it your rogue wanted to be a trap super star, he/she was going for skill focus as well as this.

The best idea I've heard for this is to make this feat add to all the "fail by 5" skills by the ability mod.

I still kind of like this base idea as it seems like an expanded crit range for a fighter, but for skills. But I like your ideas though.

There's 2 feats for every skill to get a +10 to the skill and a +4 to another skill. In the example you listed, you have skill focus and deft hands for +10 disable device and +4 sleight of hand. More feats for this become taxing to the character.

Although if you came up with a second more specialized feat it could be worth it. Maybe someone doesn't need a +4 to 2 skills and wants an added boost to an individual. For this I would say allow the +4 like the other feat and maybe increase the fail by 5 to fail by 7 or more. Makes the skill very specific and somewhat balanced vs. the other feats.

This feat grants a +2 bonus on disable device checks and decreases the chance to trigger a trap when failing by 1. When you have 10 ranks, these bonuses double to +4 and 2 respectively.
