CR Advice for a slight modification to a black dragon

Homebrew and House Rules

Simple question: I want a black dragon to have the same spellcasting progression as a red dragon; does this warrant a CR increase? How much? I should think no more than a +1 increase. What do you guys think?

It should increase the CR, but for the rest, see how much the rest of the finished creature differs from the Red of the same age. Size, breath weapon, and stats are all weaker. +1 sounds good to me.

Good point. I compared them to the red and the green since it will now be the same CR as the green. Seems comparable, so +1 seems good. Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Easy way is to add actual sorcerer levels, they should stack into the dragons and there is a formula for how class levels factor into increasing CR of a creature.

Hmmm. That's a good option. Thanks!

On a side note, for sorcerer levels on a dragon, how would you handle bloodlines? Since "magic through bloodline" is already kind of built into dragons, I'd rule that they get nothing but increased spells known, spells per day, and caster level from sorcerer levels. Unless they possess another bloodline in addition to draconic somehow...Any thoughts?

Liberty's Edge

Hmm, well if not dragon Abyssal or something unpleasant could fit a black maybe something related to plants, swamps, darkness or underground critters. The large quantity of half-dragons seems to indicate dragons aren't above tainted bloodlines. However if in doubt go with a bloodline that isn't based on a creature type per say like arcane, destined or elemental.
