Totally Noob question - What's the purpose of guilds?

Sorry to ask, but PFO is the first MMO to raise any kind of interest in me. Last computer game I played was NWN1 and played only the solo campaing.
I just allow myself to support the kickstarter yesterday. And since then, I've seen a lots and lots of posts about joining guild, or guilds recruiting, etc.

So let me ask you, what's the purpose of guilds in a MMO, and what are the rules/guidelines implied being associated with a guild?

Thanks

The main purpose of joining a Guild is to be part of a community that can help you achieve your goals. This can mean finding willing players to join your Adventuring group, or to help you Harvest, or to provide materials for you to use in Crafting, or to simply help you understand how the game works when you have questions.

It is basically just one big group of like-minded players who work together to team up and accomplish goals that benefit everyone in the guild

That will be up to each individual Guild.

The Guild doesn't really exist inside the game. It's an external community that might have many manifestations inside the game. Some Guilds will be small enough to fit inside a single Chartered Company. Some will be just large enough to build and hold a single Settlement. Some will be large enough to form a Player Nation. And some will be large enough to form several Player Nations.

The Seventh Veil aims to be in that last category. We intend to start from the very beginning building a variety of Settlements to cater to the needs and desires of a very broad base of members.

As Nihimon says it's a way for groups of like-minded players to form an in-game organisation together: Be it with a guild website and way to get to know each other and plan things.

These "Guilds" will be the structured way a lot of players then go on to form the in-game Chartered Companies, Settlements and eventually Kingdoms that Pathfinder Online will eventually develop over time.

Alternatively, they're for whatever you want them to be for. Whatever you can think of yourself being able to accomplish with many people working together (that is to say, anything), that's what guilds are for.

Together we can do what would be impossible alone.

Thank you guys, now, I've got a better understanding of what guilds are and their purpose.
