So, from what we've seen, the halflings, half orc and half elves are all missing out on being in by the time we start playing- but we know they will be in. So what I would like to see is a "placeholder status" for these races where you still choose it as a race on creation, it just shares the models and skins of another race until their race is added. Perhaps then the attributes could be accounted for on creation, maybe even any racial abilities.
Halflings could get dwarf or gnome models
half orcs human models
half elves get elf models.
That way it also means that straight away we get to see the effects on any racial abilities that might be disproportional and don't get the "racial flavor of the month" you see in many games. Then instead of giving everyone a race change, just have to give an appearance change to those who picked a race that wasn't implemented.

Seems like a good implementation, if the races themselves aren't too code intensive. I'm guessing NPCs will react differently to different races, so this may be one aspect of not putting them all in initially. Perhaps the "Halfling" flag would read as gnome in all respects until release if that is less code-intensive? That might work.

The simplest thing would be to allow the option of a single free 'race change' when a new race is released. (*cough*Tengu*cough*)
That of course opens up the "Is a Race change a free service?" question, although I would like to think the small reward for our ongoing patronage would be a one-off chance to change when it first debuts.

I'm not really satisfied with a "free race change" option. I want to be a half elf. I know there are half elves being added. Let me be one from day one, models or not. The basic characteristics should be able to be included straight away, that shouldn't be anything technically difficult, then those races can be tested and tweaked as needed along with all the others.

Fair enough but I think the "I look like a human but I'm actually a half-elf" is a) immersion-breaking and b) problematic for PVP when trying to accurately sum up exactly who your opponent is and what they can do.

and having a midlife race change isn't?
