Dispell Magic

Advice

How does this spell, Dispell Magic, work. Does it permanently dispell the magic on your groups magic items or does it only stop them from working for so long? This spell is very... ambiguous and seems a lot is left to interpretation. What about Greater Dispell Magic(same as link above just lower on the page)? It seems even more ambiguous. Could someone give some examples on how it works so that I can better understand?

I don't see what is ambiguous about it.

Quote:
You can use dispel magic to end one ongoing spell that has been cast on a creature or object, to temporarily suppress the magical abilities of a magic item, or to counter another spellcaster's spell. A dispelled spell ends as if its duration had expired. Some spells, as detailed in their descriptions, can't be defeated by dispel magic. Dispel magic can dispel (but not counter) spell-like effects just as it does spells. The effect of a spell with an instantaneous duration can't be dispelled, because the magical effect is already over before the dispel magic can take effect.
Quote:
If the object that you target is a magic item, you make a dispel check against the item's caster level (DC = 11 + the item's caster level). If you succeed, all the item's magical properties are suppressed for 1d4 rounds, after which the item recovers its magical properties. A suppressed item becomes nonmagical for the duration of the effect. An interdimensional opening (such as a bag of holding) is temporarily closed. A magic item's physical properties are unchanged: A suppressed magic sword is still a sword (a masterwork sword, in fact). Artifacts and deities are unaffected by mortal magic such as this.

Its only temporary. In order to permanently remove the magic from a magic item, you need Mage's Disjunction.

Greater Dispel Magic isn't really any better against magic items then a normal Dispel Magic. Its target ability functions like normal Dispel Magic, except it can dispel multiple spells (but not multiple items, as it only says spells). And the Area Dispel option specifically says it can't target magic items.

Silver Crusade

After as I know, the only spell that permanently dispels magical items is Mage's Disjunction, which is a 9th level spell.

So if a group has 3 buffs going, Barkskin, Bear's Endurance, & Haste, all 2nd level spells due to the group of

  • Druid
  • Ranger
  • Summoner
which spell gets affected? Is it random? How do you determine which one gets affected or do you check against all of them?

*Edited to use formatting.

The person casting the Dispel Magic has the following options:

1) The dispeller does a standard targeted Dispel Magic on the victim, and makes a dispel check to dispel the highest level spell. Because there are more than one spell of the highest level (in this case, 2nd) active, the particular effect chosen is random.

2) The dispeller chooses a specific spell affecting the target and makes a dispel check. If that check is successful, the spell is dispelled.
