I'm looking for an alternative to an iPad, mainly because I want a tablet computer as a gaming platform. What would you recommend?
If you're talking about having max number of games, the Ipad is where it's at.
Whatever you do stay away from the absolutely cheap ones or old units still running Android 2.3 or earlier, most of those are absolutely rubbish for the task at hand.
Also keep in mind that "tablet computer" more properly refers to those underpowered crunched down notebooks that companies used to try (and failed miserably) to sell as tablets in the pre-Ipad pre-Android days.
Gaming puts the highest demands on any electronic platform. A gaming quality tablet isn't going to be cheap.

Tthe Samsung Tab 10.1 is extremely nice as well.
Why this in particular instead of the many, many other ones?

Samsung makes a quality device, and it comes native with Android 4.1 (jelly bean) which is fantastic.
Add in the "S-Pen" functionality, dual-function capability, and overall connectivity (NFC, Samsung "Beam", full access to android market) and its just fantastic.
I haven't seen the new Nook HD yet, but that may be an option as well, especially if you're willing to get into the firmware and root it.
