Grim Reaper from Carrion Crown typo?

Carrion Crown

I'm wondering if there is a mistake in the combat entry for the Grim Reaper in "Shadows of Gallowspire". Here's why:

Melee +3 scythe +27/+22/+17/+12 (2d6+13/19-20/x4 plus death touch)

Now there's that, but its BAB is +21, it has a +7 STR bonus, a +3 enhancement bonus from its weapon, Weapon Focus and Greater Weapon Focus add +2, and the size penalty is only -1 since its Large. That adds up to (21+7+3+1+1-1=) +32. Where is it getting a -5 from? Is it just a typo?

Heya... lots of spoilers here, you should either put *Spoiler* in the header or... something. Pretty much your whole post is a spoiler.

Is it a secondary weapon for some reason? I don't have the book handy.

They probably dropped it a little bit with no in-game justification so it wouldn't auto-hit pretty much everything.

I've flagged the thread for a spoiler tag, but it might also benefit from being moved to the Carrion Crown sub-forum.

Why is discussing a bestiary entry a spoiler?

On topic: maybe it was supposed to always fight with combat expertise or power attack, but neither damage nor armor class are adjusted

CMB seems to be incorrect as well, it should be five higher, too

Just double checked, The Grim Reaper doesn't actually appear in the adventure, just in the Bestiary in the back.

EDIT: ninja'd by Isil-Zha

This.

He didn't say where/when it showed up or what purpose it might serve in the plot (none as far as I know BTW), he just said "this thing exists in this campaign". That's like trying to get every thread moved to their respective fora because they say "There's a dragon in X Adventure Path".

Well, I'm a she (Goddess), but anyway...

Yeah, I didn't think a bestiary entry would be considered a spoiler. In fact, I'm not even running Carrion Crown right now. I have Kyle Olsen's Combat Manager and am setting up a boss encounter for my main campaign. The monster seemed to fit what I needed, I was just curious why there were mistakes. I even checked the actual adventure to make sure the stats were entered correctly, and sure enough, they were.

The CMB should also be +29 (+21 BAB +7 STR +1 size) though it's listed as 24, and the CMD should only be 41 (10 +21 BAB +7 STR +2 DEX +1 size). Its fear aura should be DC 33 (10 +14 for 1/2 HD +9 CHA) though it's listed as 36. Just a lot of stuff that doesn't add up.

Don't even get me started on it being incorporeal and still having a STR score and such. I figure that's just a special property or something and forgave it.

I dunno, did the adventure writer just not read any of the rules before making the Grim Reaper? As for hitting anything automatically, well, it is CR 20, so I think the higher stats fit it. I've modded it for my campaign, I'm just wondering if there was an actual rules reason why the stats were so way off from what was expected.

You forgot to add the deflection bonus to CMD

And the bestiary entries are not necessarily written by the author of the adventure.

Edit: Turns out CMB and attack are correct, the thing that's actually wrong is the listed strength score (incorporeal creatures use dex instead) but don't ask me how that damage bonus came to be without a strength score

Looks to me like somebody decided halfway through that the creature should be incorporeal and overlooked some of the changes.

Whoa, wait, you add deflection to CMD?

*reads*

Holy crap, I completely missed that! Circumstance, deflection, insight, dodge, morale, sacred, and profane AC bonuses go on CMD? Wow! Well, my players will certainly be happy about this lol.

They'll be happy about it until the next time they try to Acrobatics into flanking position. :)

Ah, when you said "in the combat entry", I got the impression you were discussing an encounter not a bestiary stat-block.

+1 on being mis-lead by "in the combat entry".
