This was before paizo were providing them free.
One upside being you don't need to print it yourself.

Was the cost because it grew to 32 pages?
The RotRL one is free as a PDF or did the free RotRL PDF come later in time?
Just curious.
I can't really remember, I'm afraid. I think that the cost was due to the AP guides becoming part of the player companion line but that AP subscribers got the PDF for free. It didn't last for long though (legacy of fire was the same deal, from memory). The RotRL has two player guides now - I don't remember if the original player guide PDF was always free - it probably was though, since I distinctly remember thinking they were ridiculously good value (I generally use the printed versions).
It seems my neurones have decided to devote their efforts to remembering other things. :(

Thank you! Wish they would re-release their AP's like they did with Rise of the Runelords or make hard cover versions of them. I know i would collect them all.
I would too, but its not going to happen. Paizo don't want to create any reason to hold off on subscribing - if compilations became the norm there would be at least some people who wouldn't subscribe but would wait for the hardcover. That would be a bad thing.

As Steve said, the price tag was due to the Player's Guide getting longer and becoming part of the Companion line, but that model only lasted 2 APs.
RotRL and CotCT had printed pamphlet-style Player's Guides that sold for $2 or so, iirc, but the PDF version was free. The Player Companion line launched with SD, and the player's guides were padded out with extra material but sold at Companion prices, both print and PDF. I presume the feedback on not having a free downloadable Player's Guide was negative, as they became PDF-only free products for the rest of the APs. Printing physical copies, as with the first 2 APs, proved cost-prohibitive, and players didn't want to pay $10 for a book or $7 for a PDF; so the free-but-PDF-only Player's Guide is a compromise.

Perhaps... but its also an opportunity to make soem good money off of out-of-print or obselete material. Even if they only limited themselves to doing it for the non-Pathfinder AP's like Second Darkness and Legacy of Fire, I have to believe it would result in more profit for them than less.

Possibly. However, paizo often get asked about it and their consistent answer is as close to never as they ever get.
Their business plan is based on a subscription model and has been hugely successful for them. Creating an incentive (however small) for us to drop our subscription would be an added risk to their ongoing business.
