Question about RotRL minis...

Miniatures

I am quite a bit anal retentive and ADHD and I can't stand that the RotRL minis come on round bases when my battle mat has a grid. I would like to cut the minis off the round bases and attach them to square ones.
Anyone done this? Would you recommend it?
Thanks for entertaining my craziness.

I actually prefer the round bases so I can turn them the way they're facing.

I know there's no actually facing rules, but I like my figures to be looking at what they're attacking.

If you really want to though, a reallly sharp hobby knife is advised, and then you can glue the mini to a new base. I've done so to rebase some minis from other systems that were on too big of a base for 1 inch grids.

You'll have to buy some square bases-- Warhammer Fantasy Battles, I believe, does squares.

Personally I prefer round bases because it means you can squeeze groups together more realistically.
Yes, you threaten a large area--but your character only occupies a small part of the 5' by 5' square.

In practice round bases offer higher functionality. You have more ability to rotate the mini to avoid collisions for instance. Too often a mini has a projecting part such as a sword which will stick into an adjacent square. With a round base, you can rotate the mini until it fits in combat without a problem.

Similarly, you can actually fit minis closer together if something cinematic calls for it. I quite like it when Medium creatures are up against Huge or larger and get grabbed.

Finally, round bases sort of give a visual reminder why things work with 5ft squares. The mini itself doesn't take up the whole square but with sweeping arms, the "footprint" allocates roughly a 5ft circle. Using a grid, 5ft squares approximate that well.

Anyway, I get the obsessive-compulsive symmetry of square bases in square squares but... utility trumps OCD in my world. Now if you excuse me, I need to get back to shopping for a fridge that is exactly 3ft wide so it matches my floor tiles properly. <Grin>

You can snap off the minis from the bases, but you wil want to use care not to break the mini as you do it.

I have not done this with Pathfinder minis but I have done it with HeroClix and other minis.

It's not just the "round bases on square tiles" but also the fact that I use a bunch of minis from other lines. I mainly use Warhammer and Reaper minis with some Rackam minis as well. I only bought a few of the prepainted minis to fill in the gaps. All my minis have square bases but the prepainted.
Last night I took an xacto knife and trimmed Malfeshnekor off the base. I had already sculpted a rock base to a square warhammer base and I put Malfeshnekor on that. Then I painted him and the base because I can't stand the paint jobs on the prepainted minis.
It looks really awesome.

Where are the pictures? ;-)

I do understand the desire to have everything on simular bases.

Good Luck on your conversions.
