Price of "Hurricane Quaterstaff" but using Hydraulic Torrent

I was wondering if someone could help me with pricing a Hurricane Staff but using Hydraulic Torrent instead of Gust of Wind. The only issue is that Hydraulic Torrent is one lvl higher then gust of wind (lvl 2 vs lvl 3) and does seem to have slightly more powerful capacity.

So taking these things into account can anyone give me some pricing ideas on this...well actually if someone has a good name for this staff that would be cool too.


Add an extra 500-1000 gold because the effect is very similar but slightly more powerful?

Call it the Vortex Staff.

The base price for a 2nd level spell 1/day command word item is 2160. (2*3*1800/5)
The base price for a 3rd level spell 1/day command word item is 5400.
(3*5*1800/5)

I'd lean toward at least 3240gp price difference maybe with some rounding to make the price a more even number.


Parsing out the costs of the item, the value of the Gust of Wind is ~3k (item price is 7,840 gp, but 4,000 of that is the +1/+1, double MWK for 600). This makes the Ki usage ~1,000 of this cost.

I'd use Maezer's numbers.


So with a price of $11,080 (which would be the base price 7,840 + 3,240 suggested increase) I am happy but brings me to the 2nd part of the creation; gust of wind is just a spell DC save but Hydraulic Torrent allows for either a bull rush or break check equal to caster lvl + key stat. How would you modify that for the staff? I was thinking have a base 6 (caster lvl 5 (min caster lvl to cast the spell) + 1 (stat of 13 which would be the min stat necessary to cast the spell) or 5 + Wisdom modifier if a monk spends a ki point to activate. Does this seem reasonable for the price suggested? Should it be more or less?

Yeah I know...that is the issue I am having as well. Although most magic items have crappy DC saves anyways and the only item I know that is comparable at all is the ring of the ram which has a max of +19 CMB (if you expend 3 charges) but only has 50 charges


I would say the +10 CMB check is fine.

Though I would probably price it at 11,000 GP, 10,500 or 10K.

A base +10 with ability to use ki point to increase or what exactly do you mean? Also why the lower price?


I would say CMB = Monk or Ninja level + WIS mod if using Ki, otherwise +6 as you suggested.


I meant the +10 max that Rynjin stated.

The lower price is based on it being low DC/Bonus. As 11,080 seems high for a +1/+1 quarterstaff with a low bonus especially around the level one would afford it.

Though I personally think both of these staffs would benefit from Least, Standard, & Greater versions. Say:

Least: make it CMB=(1/2 Monk/Ninja/Ki-Using-Class Level)+WIS Mod when they use their Ki.

Standard: CMB=5+(1/2 Monk/Ninja/Ki-Using-Class Level)+WIS Mod when they use their Ki.

Greater: CMB=10+(1/2 Monk/Ninja/Ki-Using-Class Level)+WIS Mod when they use their Ki.

Otherwise a flat +5 would be good.
