Another idea I'd like help with: Spy with a No Dachi

Advice

So i was wondering what people thought about the spy class from the srd site, its in a 3rd party book? What i was thinking in particular, was using it as a template to make something crazy and different than the basic spy, by using all the feats it can select with its spy talents, instead of the special talents it can get like fast stealth, etc (i would still take a few of those too). Seems likei could pick a nodachi, and load up on expanded crit feat and make My dm's day a nightmare. I wss thinking about taking 4 levels of magus(kensai) to be able to maximise my weapon damage or increase crit multiplier, as well as get a few spells to augment my sneaky-melee, but maybe not.

Levels 2-10 lets me pick a combat feat at 2, 4, 6, 8, and level 10 give advanced talent which could give a feat at 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, & 20 (i think). Combined to the feats a character gets at every other level starting at 1, that equals a feat every level...right? Please tell me if im wrong, im rusty with these rules, but that would essentially mean a feat at every level in addition to rhe sneak attack progression and other stuffz the spy gets.

NUMBER ONE thing about this is that i would be flavored other than a spy, more like a special agent, with a big sword haha! What is the best way to get a crazy crit range? A no dachi with keen, improved crit, and...? Is there a way to increase it further? And what would it be, 18-20 -> 16-20 -> 12-20/x2?

Basically want to make a sneaky crit machine, that can infiltrate places but is also extremely charming and likeable. With a giant sword. :)

Anything good to dip with this? Flurry of blows, or the oversized weapon barb to weild the no dachi in one hand? The aforementioned kensai?

My numbers are 18, 16, 16, 14, 13, 12. Thanks if you reply to this!

Although I'm not familiar with the 3pp Spy class, there are a number of problems with your proposed build.

1) Unless otherwise stated, talents (rogue, ninja, or spy) may only be selected once. So the 'combat trick' talent and the 'feat' advanced talent may only each be selected one time, for a gain of two feats. You'd need to choose other talents at the other levels. Still good, just can't be any feat you want.

2) Crit range extenders (of any kind, but including keen and improved critical) do not stack in Pathfinder. You'll need to choose one and go with it. The maximum threat range will be 15-20 (an 18-20 weapon doubled once).

3) A huge sword like a No-dachi is hardly appropriate for a Spy (or special agent) type character, but if the flavor works for you and your GM, by all means go ahead with it. IMO it could be cool, but you'd definitely need to run it by any GM I play with before using what is effectively a greatsword with a class intended to be a sneaky/infiltrator type.

Oh :( nevermind then haha, sadface. I thought you could take it multiple times, but the class is a lot like the ninja/rogue. Damn. Well thanks, could still acomplish some of what i want, but yeah... Not exactly.

Thanks bunches for the response :)

If you go magus, make sure you talk to your DM about it first. Many DM's aren't going to allow you to remove a hand from the nodachi as a free action, which is required in order to some of the TWF-esque magus stuff.

Though just channeling shocking grasp through your sword is pretty good by itself.

Think elf/half-elf with a curve blade. You at least maintain the illusion of sneaky/finesse character (at least in my opinion). I made a Thief/Fighter build once upon a time that had an extended crit range and emphised on intimidation thru dazzeling display, with some rediculous feats tacked on. He was a bad ass, a bit of a glass cannon, but if he dictated the fight it was a bloody mess.

Spy, kensai, half-elf, curve bladed, death machine.

I was thinking spy kensai, just dont know the level spread i should use. Spy/kensai/arcane trickster?

I don't like the magus class so I don't know much about it and the spy is 3rd party so I just glanced at it. I can tell you I took more levels of fighter on my build, 2:1 or so. I wouldn't add the arcane trickster into the mix, but that is me, the spy and kensai classes will suffer for it.

If your allowed to use any 3.5 material, there are a few really good multiclassing feats that would work with a fighter/spy(rogue) character. I believe the one that I'm thinking of is called something like aesthetic.... something. Hold on *goes to check*

my bad, It was for fighter and ninja levels. Even worse, it allowed you to count as both classes for the purposes of ninja armor from stats and fighter feats....pfff

There was one (3.5 feat) allowing for a save vs. stun upon a crit hit if the opponent was shaken. It stacked nicely with dazzling display and gave you a good reason to play a face type character.
