How many players minimum do you need to play pathfinder and also do you need a dm or how does pathfinder work exactly?
The absolute Minimum in players is one. You will also need a DM which brings the needed people to two.
So the minimum needed people to play pathfinder is two.
I would recommend 4-5 people however if you had them available. That is a DM (1) and 3-4 players.
Welcome to Pathfinder!

How many Players gotta Play, depends on the amount of game that Players got.
Some Players got mad game, and some Players got no game, so instead, they just be hatin'.
So in the end, when it comes to game, Players gonna Play, and Haters gonna Hate, and the Player with the most game gets the most Hatin' from Haters.

Anyways, OP, you need at least one DM and at least one player, preferably more players. The beginner box might be a good idea, since it sounds like you're new to the game, and the beginner box is easier to get into than the core books, at first, for most people--whether you're a player or GM.

This is also fine advice.

My ideal range is 1 DM and 4-5 PCs. You can do 3 players but they might have difficulty covering all the bases. Combats rounds move quick though, and that is attractive. How well it works completely depends on the players and DM though. If you go above 5 players the game will begin to slow down. Combat rounds are longer, and people begin to indulge in non-game talk that further distracts and bogs game play.
