yea that's why I'm not too inclined to protect it and such. The entrance to our part is in a back alley and the owner of the home lives above us with a trapdoor joining the two 'apartments'.
I don't think the leaders of the town are actively going from house to house searching for things and lead lining is going to be expensive/nobody has profession architect and the DM has stated this skill is needed to properly alter the house.
No killing will probably be unnecessary, the party seems to believe that it was a misunderstanding and have been working to right the situation.
