It was mentioned in the blog that a players skills could be trained "leveled" so to say while offline similar to EVE. Never having played EVE or any other game that comes close to this concept I'm a bit confused on a couple things.
First if skills advance while you're offline what if any advantages would someone that plays 8 hrs a day compared to someone who plays 2hrs a day have?
If a said skill say sword skill 1 takes 4hrs to learn would i learn it faster online fighting stuff or would it just advance reguardless of time spent using the skill?
It's a bit late for me so i might be overthinking all of this but it's bothering me now so any input would be helpful.
thanks
also.... love what i've seen on the blog so far from you guys at goblinworks and can't wait to see the game.

I've never played EVE, but my understanding is that time played does not affect the rate at which skills are learned. In PFO what you do during play will be important to advancement because your action in play unlock badges that give you new abilities if you have a high enough skill.
At least that is how I understand the system.

Skills are one part of the advancement path, badges are where you get the abilities from, and badges require both a skill training, and action requirement(craft 5 swords, discover 3 hexes, kill 10 boars). Wealth is also a factor in a players power, you will be able to create better gear
People who are online more will be able to complete more action requirements, and probably accumulate more wealth.
Training time is determined by your attributes.

In eve, the main thing is, your skills are just one part of your character.
Skills, wealth, diplomatic ties etc... all go hand in hand. Most major activities in eve, take forming a squad, or giant armies. If you are a nobody who signs on once every month, presuming you did wind up picking a good skill combination, what you will lack in is
1. Strategy skills, you won't be very good at planning things out, which is a key to success in any part of eve.
2. Wealth, you will be poor, you don't only need money for a decent ship/equips for it, you need 4-10x what the ship is worth (Because if you die, you lose that ship and gear, having spares is kind of important).
3. Diplomatic ties, you need to be in a group for most major activities. if nobody's ever heard your name, that could be a limiting factor for you.

You will be able to accomplish more of your goals, such as harvesting resources, crafting gear, building Settlements, exploring dungeons and wilderness, etc.

Your Skill will advance at the same rate of time regardless of whether or not you're playing.
Several people have mentioned Merit Badges. These were explained in the blog Your Pathfinder Online Character.
Merit Badges: Merit badges are a combination of measuring the progression of your character (as in first-person shooters like Battlefield 3) and recognizing the character has done something notable (like the achievements in World of Warcraft). Most merit badges require that you first finish training a specific skill or skills. Some also require that you do something in-game, such as harvest a certain amount of resources, or slay a certain number of monsters, or explore a portion of the map. When you have completed the requirements, the merit badge is awarded, and you will likely also get a new ability associated with that merit badge.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned relates to trying in skill training from a subscription to a particular character. There needs to be some way to automatically associate the right to train in skills to a character. This would then allow people to queue up skill training with a particular character and not have the worry of remember to log in each month to activate the right to train in skills. I bring this up because of the discusion relating to skill queuing particularly while people are on holiday or can't access the internet for long periods of time.
