Standard bearer Cavalier with expert trainer but no mount class feature

Rules Questions

The Standard bearer archetype exchanges his banner and mount abilities.
So at level 4 he gets expert trainer but has no mount ability yet.

What can he do now?
If he has levels in another class (without an AC) and qualifies for the horse master feat, does he get an AC without ever having gained the AC or mount ability? Or is the ability expert trainer useless for him untill he gets the mount ability at level 5?

Ya that archetype lets you get Cavalier's Charge at 3 which is also kinda useless without a mount.

To qualify for the feat, he has to have a class that gives him a mount. You can't just take the old plowhorse from the field over there and say he's now amazing cuz of your training. A Mount is a creature you have made a special bond with.

However, I think that feat eliminates any issues with stacking from multiple classes. Here, JJ says that a character with Cavalier levels and Druid levels would have two companions of separate levels, not one of the combined levels. However, since the feat changes your progression to class levels, I would say that you could go Druid 2 and Cavalier 4 and use Horsemaster to have a 6th level Mount.

With horse master you use your character level for progression. So combined with what JJ said that would lead to a cavalier 4/druid 2 with horsemaster and boon companion who would have both a level 6 AC and a level 6 mount.
Have to talk with my GM about this :)

And if you continued to take Druid levels you'd not lose progression on either. Woe be your GM.
