666 & Last Resort: Cancelled

Television

I didn't watch either of these, and apparently not many other people did either.

Sorry if they were ones you enjoyed.

:(

Last Resort has been fun and deserves a little credit for being something different at least. Hope they are able to finish up their story by season end.

Liberty's Edge

666 Park Avenue is great; but I've seen the weekly numbers tank so badly since it started, I'm surprised they don't just pull it immediately (like with Defying Gravity). I think it would have made a great TV miniseries, like we used to have in the Old Days.

As much as I really enjoy the show, I can't see it going for more than a dozen episodes--there's not enough story to take it 6 seasons and a movie. Oh, well.

The pilot of Last Resort was pretty good, but it didn't feel like the writers had really locked in their story arcs. I liked the possibility that Marcus was crazy, but ultimately the show had a lot of the same concerns as Homeland (is terrorism ever justified? is one of the main characters a maverick genius or a crazy person? are the terrible things that war does to our soldiers worth whatever we get from having them fight? can military spouses ever really know their soldiers? etc.) and Homeland is not an act you want to try to follow, especially not this season with Claire Danes and Damian Lewis devouring their lines and spitting out Emmys at every turn.

I don't think I'd do a show dealing with terrorism until Homeland either goes off the air or jumps the shark.

Homeland started out okay, in my opinion, but I could care less what the people who hand out awards think, after the first few episodes it pretty much turned into an overwrought mess. That last SNL skit pretty much hit it dead on.

We'll have to agree to disagree there. Having spent quite a bit of time around bipolar people, I think Danes' portrayal of Carrie is pretty compelling.

My wife and I both said the same thing when we saw commercials for both of these shows; These can't last longer than a season. Really, look at the premise of each; how can the base plot for either of these go longer than a few episodes?

With Last Resort, how long until the US just nukes the sub.

With 666 PA, the main character will eventually discover the supernatural qualities of the building, and what, move?

Both of these would have made fine mini-series. But on-going shows? Wasn't going to happen. The news of them being canceled strikes me as absolutely no surprise.

Same thing with the show "Nashville," I can't fathom how this show would continue longer than 1 season. It could have been summed up in a made for TV movie or something.

Good lord I miss having cable.

Maybe the story couldn't last longer than a season, but the show could. Personally, I like the "one story a season" type shows - Once Upon A Time, The Shield, Breaking Bad. Tell me a story, finish it, and then do something else.

I don't get the feeling Last Resort was doing that though. Will the whole Pakistan story get revealed and resolved by the end? I'm guessing not which will be disappointing.

Your examples all have a base premise that allows for multiple stories to continue. Once Upon a Time works until they've used up all the classic fairy tales, at least.

Both the canceled shows in the OP have a weak base setting that can get solved in a very short span. Seriously, 13 episodes is reeeeally pushing it. They would work great under a shorter amount of episodes, like a mini-series or even just one movie.

It's the RPG equivalent of making an entire campaign setting out of a single adventure. Ravenloft did this, few others have.

Liberty's Edge

666 might have fared better going the anthology route. They could have kept the location and Terry O., but introduced all new supporting characters and storyline.
