Does the spell Shield of Faith stack with a normal shield?

Rules Questions

Had a local Pathfinder DM last weekend say no...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm almost 100% sure that shield of faith gives a deflection bonus to AC, while a shield gives a shield bonus. Therefore they should stack. It seems strange that shield of faith doesn't give a shield bonus, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Grand Lodge

Two different kinds of bonuses to AC. They stack.

The description of Shield of Faith describes a shimmering magic field around the target. Since it grants a deflection bonus (not a shield bonus) it does stack.

Grand Lodge

Simple rule of thumb... Are the bonuses different? If the answer is yes, they stack. If the answer is no, then they don't unless the bonuses are dodge, or untyped.

Grand Lodge

Show him the spell, and the type of bonus it gives.

He may be confusing it with the Shield spell.

Thanks for all your help. I thought he was wrong too but he seemed so sure of the rule. I bet your right about shield spell vs shield of Faith.

Don't get misled by names, always look at the actual rules text.

Yep, just remind him that despite the name Shield of Faith grants a deflection bonus and he should realize his mistake.

The Shield arcane spell gives a shield bonus (which does not stack). The Shield of Faith divine spell gives a deflection bonus (which does). These two spells get confused a lot.
