Gas lines? You mean in the storm affected areas? I think a lot of those areas have laws against price gouging. The lines are just a short term symptom of their not being a lot of stations open and of less supply making it in.
It's not like the cost of gas to the stations has gone up, so any price increase would be pure profit.

There are gouging laws, but they don't seem to be stopping the stations near me on Long Island from charging $4.50 or so per gallon.
Then again, without the laws, it would probably be up to $7 by now. Second-hand resold gas on Craigslist (for those who can't get it otherwise or don't want to wait in line) is running at $15/gal.

Also if the station in question has to run their own generators for power to run the pumps that would be a legitimate (and expensive) addition to the price.
Saw this done during the blackout of 2004 which hit a huge section of southern Ontario and the NE USA. People complained then too.
