Wild Shape: Elemental Body text question

Rules Questions

I did not think this was an issue until I read the text on elemental body (i have it listed the important parts in brackets bellow). As I understand it Wild Shape does not provide abilities of the shape you take unless listed. In the text it outlines three abilities but does not word it in a way that would exclude the other abilities. So I would like to know what you get and what you don't get the list bellow are some of the elemental's abilities? I would say though that the most reasonable assumption is that the listed abilities are the only ones you get.

Earth Glide (Ex)
Earth Mastery (Ex)
Burn (Ex)<-clearly listed
Drench (Ex)
Vortex (Su)<-clearly listed
Water Mastery (Ex)
Air Mastery (Ex)
Whirlwind (Su)<-clearly listed

When you cast this spell, you can assume the form of a Small air elemental, Small earth elemental, Small fire elemental, or Small water elemental. The abilities you gain depend upon the type of elemental into which you change. [Elemental abilities based on size, such as burn, vortex, and whirlwind, use the size of the elemental you transform into to determine their effect.]
-the uses of "such as" is my problem along with "based on size," but maybe I am just tripping

This spell functions as elemental body II, except that it also allows you to assume the form of a Large air elemental, large earth elemental, large fire elemental, or large water elemental. The abilities you gain depend upon the type of elemental into which you change. [You are also immune to bleed damage, critical hits, and sneak attacks while in elemental form.]

This spell functions as elemental body III, except that it also allows you to assume the form of a Huge air elemental, Huge earth elemental, Huge fire elemental, or Huge water elemental. The abilities you gain depend upon the type of elemental into which you change. [You are also immune to bleed damage, critical hits, and sneak attacks while in elemental form and gain DR 5/—.]

I believe the earth elemental forms grant you earth glide.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The abilities you get are listed by the spell, under the listing for each individual type of elemental.

Elemental abilities based on size, such as burn, vortex, and whirlwind, use the size of the elemental you transform into to determine their effect.

Air elemental: If the form you take is that of a Small air elemental, you gain a +2 size bonus to your Dexterity and a +2 natural armor bonus. You also gain fly 60 feet (perfect), darkvision 60 feet, and the ability to create a whirlwind.

Earth elemental: If the form you take is that of a Small earth elemental, you gain a +2 size bonus to your Strength and a +4 natural armor bonus. You also gain darkvision 60 feet, and the ability to earth glide.

Fire elemental: If the form you take is that of a Small fire elemental, you gain a +2 size bonus to your Dexterity and a +2 natural armor bonus. You gain darkvision 60 feet, resist fire 20, vulnerability to cold, and the burn ability.

Water elemental: If the form you take is that of a Small water elemental, you gain a +2 size bonus to your Constitution and a +4 natural armor bonus. You also gain swim 60 feet, darkvision 60 feet, the ability to create a vortex, and the ability to breathe water.

So if you take air elemental form you get whirlwind, if you take earth elemental form you get earth glide, etc.

Several elementals have abilities you won't gain by assuming elemental form, which applies to all those you listed except earth glide.

thx!

The earth elemental form does not give earth glide, but it does give Push.

Which earth elementals themselves don't get, leading to confusion.

Rather than adjudicate it ("Medium Earth gives Push 5 ft, Large 10 ft, Huge 15 ft" or whatever) or replace it with some other ability, paizo in a most cowardly fashion simply removed the text from the spell completely and unfairly gimped earth form in doing so.

*sigh*

On another note, every single person on this forum will disagree with me, but I still posit that the EB IV Air Elemental form grants 120 ft speed, even though actual air elementals max at 100. While the general polymorph rules state you treat the spell-granted bonus as the "upper limit" rather than what you actually get necessarily... ALL air elementals have fly 100, and there is no other "air elemental." There comes a point where specific does, in fact, trump general...

Sorry, at least the rants were somewhat on topic. ;)

Huh?

My mistake. Posting in a rush on my way out the door never seems to end well.

And my druid has used the earth glide previously, too...

thanks guys!
