Ice Tomb while swallowed

Rules Questions

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Our group ran into an odd situation this past Sunday, and I'd like your take on it:

What happens when a witch with the Ice Tomb hex targets a creature that has another creature inside it? For example, if my fighter is swallowed whole by a purple worm, and the Witch Ice Tombs the worm, what happens to my fighter?

In the specific case we ran into this weekend, my cavalier was swept up in the vortex of a Water Elemental. The elemental was then frozen with ice tomb. What happens to my cavalier?

If it matters, the particular fight in question was also happening underwater :-P

Being swallowed whole is just another way of saying you're being "grappled" in a special way. Effects that target the creature only won't affect the grappled character, but with Ice Tomb, there's a sheet of ice that entombs the target. If your character can "escape" the grapple effect of swallow whole by either cutting his way out or crawling out (should be auto success with a paralyzed foe), he will still face the 20 hp sheet of ice that entraps both he and the target.

As to the Water Elemental, because elementals are not subject to sleep or paralyze effects, I would have ruled Ice Tomb has no secondary effect. Otherwise, I'd rule as above.

Ice Tomb + Water elemental+shatter=Cold drinks for all! :-)
