Carrion Crown Continuity Issue: Auren Vrood

Carrion Crown

In Haunting of Harrowstone, it is said that Vrood kills Prof. Lorrimor with "one of his phantasmal killer spells".

Okay, fair enough. However, when we get to Broken Moon and fight this necromancer, we find the following issue: He does not have Phantasmal Killer prepared, now is it listed as a spell his spellbook contains. The spellbook contains "contains all prepared spells, all 0-level spells, plus arcane eye, create undead, mirror image, and 1d6 random spells of levels 1–5"

Ergo, when i roll that 1d6, I MUST assign one of the spells, or the only one should I roll a 1, as Phantasmal Killer? Am I missing something?

Add phantasmal killer to that list.

Ta-da.

It's a pretty insignificant oversight.

Or maybe he at that point in time had a scroll or wand of phantasmal killer. *shrug*

Is this even worth bringing up? I'm just wondering.

If it is, how lucky we are that it's an easy one to fix! =)

Definitely not.

There are way more problems with Broken Moon than this one.

Heh.

I had Vrood overkill the professor with Circle of Death, instead of killing him of a phantasmal killer.

Lady Vesorianna described it as a black whirlpool descending upon the professor, leaving a corpse behind.

Oh my god, you must be in terrible pain when you need to shop for underwear, cotton? polyester? mix? OMG!!!

Yeah I think Circle of Death is way better and have a Circle of dead trees and plants in the area of effect of the spell

you're all over thinking it, just have them drop the stone gargoyle on his face BEFORE he dies:)

This.

This.

Everyone in my party of characters assumed that it was murder by gargoyle, actually. I saw no reason to give them clues to any other method since it was irrelevant.

I wanted them to realize it was circle of death that killed him so they would fear the man in bone armor for a few levels

Grand Lodge

Hold person and then allow the good professor to be laid down in the right position, to watch in mounting horror as the gargoyle is manueved and then drop towards his face and ultimately kill him.

Wouldn't a Circle of Death be a huge red flag to the town that the professor's death wasn't an accident? Why wouldn't the Sheriff and local cleric be investigating the use of powerful necromancy, or calling to Lepidstat for help?

Circle of Death would leave an unmarred corpse, as would Phantasmal Killer. The gargoyle could still be used to make it look like an accident.

But in the days after the professor's body was recovered, all the vegetation that was killed within the spell's effect would turn brown, leaving a telltale circle for the players to find.

Incidentally, Phantasmal Killer isn't the only spell apparently missing from Auren Vrood's spellbook. If he placed the traps at Schloss Caromarc, you would expect Death Fog and Summon Monster VI to be in there too.

I toyed with the idea of replacing the Death Fog trap with a Cloudkill trap, but decided I wasn't that cruel.

Regarding this, i'm also mesmerized by the fact that mr Vrood would have spent 3.500 mo and 7 days of work to trap that bridge ...

Check the Obituaries thread for how many PCs have died to that trap.

Vrood got his money's worth, is what I'm saying.
