[Homebrew] Champion (Alternate Paladin)

Homebrew and House Rules

2 people marked this as a favorite.

A lot of ideas have been tossed around regarding holy warriors for alignments other than lawful good and chaotic evil, so I decided to try my hand at it for some bad guys in an upcoming campaign, though I'll probably make it available for my players if they so choose.

Base Class: Champion.

Notes: I dropped the aura & smite <alignment> abilities in exchange for the inquisitor's judgements (minus 2 of them). The aura abilities only affect the champion. Added "Paths" which are basically skins for determining what ability types you get (whether you channel negative or positive, get intimidate or diplomacy, lay on hands or mercies and so on).

This a (REALLY) rough draft. I ultimately want to give them something other than touch of corruption/lay on hands, but I've yet to determine what I want that to be other than versatile enough to work for all paths. Levels 11 and 14 empty (save for spells).

Constructive criticism, questions, and comments are appreciated.

Haven't read it yet, but perhaps give each path an ability in the vein of LoH) ToC?

This looks to ba a pretty good balanced class so far. Filling in your problem areas will likely make it even better. i have nothing to suggest, but looking forward to seeing you flesh this out.

Right now, that's exactly how it is. The good & evil get either LoH or Toc, while the neutral alignments can select, but must commit to their choice.

Trying to figure out something that follows the same pattern, but is unique, is turning out to be harder for this class than the other's I've worked on.

Thanks! It's another attempt in a long list of failures for a "holy warrior". Hopefully, I can get inspired.=)

1) Should put that they get either mercies or cruelties in the advancement chart. Otherwise, it looks like they are simply getting dead levels at 6, 9, and 12. Not a good first impression to make.

2) Any reason why there are no Champions of Lawful Evil or Chaotic Good?

3) Why does discerning gaze state that Champions are good at ferreting out deception, but instead of giving a bonus to sense motive it gives a bonus to Intimidate?

4) Why is true judgement based on Wisdom when the secondary abilities of the Paladin, the class this is based off of, where all moved to Charisma?

Edit: Very good overall again. Nice class.

Here is my True Neutral Aeonic Paladin. He has "Amendments" instead of Cruelties and Mercies.

Thanks!

1. Done.

2. That's an oversight on my part. I completely skipped them. Added now.

3. Fixed. An issue when I was splitting up the feature.

4. Another oversight. Thanks!

Added in Divine Resurgence & Restorations. This replaces the lay on hands and touch of corruption mechanic and applies only to the champion himself. Mechanically, the champion so far is much more selfish than the paladin/antipaladin, that is, a majority of his abilities affect only himself. I did this in part due to the judgement class feature, which is a great deal better (in my opinion) than the Smite X class feature (which I truly despise due to the alignment restrictions).

Working on a more unified phrasing for the 11th level and 14th level abilities(edit: unified and added).

I dig it, the amendments are pretty neat.

Thanks! I like "Champion" as an overall blanket term.

I think I jacked it from Monte Cook - his Arcana Evolved or Unearthed book has a class that's called champion, but is less holy warrior and more warrior for a specific cause. One of the things I like about a lot of his work post-WotC is his addition of guidelines in many entries to help you create alternate effects for some classes.
