I have a player with a tiefling bard who want's to multiclass to a gunslinger to give his character almost a western feel. I wouldn't have a problem with this, but for the free battered gun at first level. I don't want to tell him he can't do it, but I am unsure how to let him do it beyong just dropping a gun into his lap via loot from foes or have him buy one via black market or something. Ideas? Thanks.

Elamdri, just dropping the free gun into his lap seems kinda boring to me, like shark repellant in Batman's utility belt.
However, I do like the idea Petty Alchemy put forth... I will need to think on it...
No worse than characters magically waking up one morning and sprouting wings, or another arm, or an animal companion or suddenly having a close personal relationship with a deity, or suddenly having years upon years of magical training.
Some stuff you just gotta handwave for the sake of the game. If it's REALLY that big of a deal, just have him find a gunsmithing kit with a battered gun in it.

Make them do a bard song-and-dance number for it.
Out-of-Character, in front of the rest of the group.
Set to Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina".
Fantastic, that is funny for reasons I probably shouldn't go into!
But I like the idea of a "work in progress gun," or the gunsmith kit. I was just trying to think of a way to do it without handwaving it, but it seems I may need to. Just creatively. Thanks for the advice!| Lamontius |
Is the character suitably bardy? Maybe have them be "rewarded" with the battered gun by someone who heard them sing/speak/act.
The NPC could tell them something like,
"Here, take this. After that miserable excuse for a performance, if I keep it I'm probably going to turn it on myself, just to escape the memory of what I just saw/heard."
