Is Lore Master worth it?

Advice

Alright, so the group is currently running Rappan Athuk and we just reached level 7. I am playing the party Wizard, and rocking out various Pit spells whenever we encountered clustered monsters. (12 kills in the Ghast/Ghoul room on my own)

Now with that level I am thinking of taking a skill focus and spreading some ranks around so that at level 8 Lanliss (the Elf Wizard) can then take Lore Master. So far I am the primary knowledge guy. Many of the secrets look helpful, although not as much as some classes. I am also drawn to the class because I keep getting my new spell levels.

So my question overall is if the Lore Master class is worth it?

Sovereign Court

You'll have to hunt for scrolls and spell books to get new things in your own book, but otherwise it's a very enjoyable prestige class.

Something different that isn't just Wizard+ and it certainly helps with the knowledge skills.

Dotting because a PC in my games is 2nd level still but thinking of going down the same road.

Flavor wise it makes alot of sense and can be alot of fun to play. Not really optimal if thats your thing but id go for it.

In terms of party optimization it actually fits quite well, because after the math my character will get a 17 bonus on Knowledge Arcana *before* a level of it, that's with class skill bonus (3), skill focus (3), 7 ranks, and 4 Int bonus.

The secrets are the real fun, although a lot of them are not worth taking really to me. I focus on keeping out of melee, and battlefield control, so he does not often get into any kind of direct conflict. The extra spells, and some of the other bonuses are good tho.

I am pretty sure that I will take it next time we level just for something fun. It is also fairly "fluffy" in terms of flavor as it directly relates to my character. He worships the lord of vaults, and is motivated primarily by knowledge and wealth.

Quick side question, would I be able to take any of the Arcane Discoveries after I take a level in LM? They are in place of feats..

As long as you have the minimum wizard levels to qualify for them you can. You are able to take them with regular feats or wizard bonus feats so probably not any loremaster bonus feats.

As an example, you won't be able to take the Golem Constructor unless you have 9 levels of wizard.

So I would be limited to 7th level and below discoveries, and my "wizard levels" that I would get as a LM would not apply.

Correct. It is similar to weapon specialisation requiring 4 levels of fighter.

Loremaster would have to state something like "stacks with levels of Wizard for the purposes of selecting arcane discoveries"

That said, at your current level of wizard you would still be eligible for half of them.
