The prisoners were clearly good empiricists and trying to teach him about a posteriori knowledge.

Perhaps he swallowed the keys. Or the obvious answer: the keys fell into his pelvis from wherever he stored them as his body and clothing decayed.

This is a classic horror trick. Don't fill in the details for the players, and their imagination will come up with the most terrible possible explaination without you haven't to say anything.
