Running the Flail Snail

The flail snail has the following ability:

Retraction (Ex)
A flail snail can pull its fleshy parts into its shell as a swift action, increasing its natural armor bonus by +6, but it cannot move or attack while retracted. It can return to normal as a free action.

Is there any reason he shouldn't end each turn by retracting, and begin each turn by returning to normal, thus gaining him a +6 natural armor bonus at all times other than his turn? Is this the intent?

There is really a creature called the Flail Snail? Checking... Yep. There is. Weird.

Well, this is a perfectly legitimate defensive strategy, but you are giving up the chance to make opportunity attacks with the 10ft reach. A snail on the offensive or with allies would probably hesitate to give up its battlefield control unless surrounded or seriously threatened. That's just my two copper.

Seriously though, Flail Snail?

Oh man, if you think that is bad...

Good point about the opportunity attacks, although with a range of 10 feet my PCs are likely to come in at the corners and attack, and altogether avoid his flaily opportunity attack. And each opportunity attack ain't that great. I think I'll stick with defensive mode.

Thanks!

... Every now any again, I really hate my hobby. Great article though, thanks.

Fun fact: The corners thing does not work. Look at the Space/Reach Template for large creatures with reach. You will see that it is a square.

Happy snailing.
