A last update before I go abroad.

* Lenore, Hasslefree Miniatures

* The last of the Celtic Warriors, Warlord Games, Picture, Picture

I'm not painting anything at the moment, but will be soon.

Right now I'm assembling my Super Dungeon Explore miniatures, and Impact Miniatures Chibi Ponies.

I kit bashed some Wargames factory Orcs with Perry brothers late Medieval mercenaries so I now have some Orcs with Matchlocks guns Im painting

Time for another update.

My quickest turnaround from purchase to finished yet! Recieved the order (Ulf Gormundr, the three bones zombies and the two DDM wolves) this monday and completed it yesterday \o/

I've painted Ulf as the miniature for a friends character in an upcoming DnD campaign. Quite pleased with the result and I kind of want to create a character of my own and use this to represent him

* Ulf Gormundr, Reaper Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3, Picture 4

Some more quickdips!
* Bulette, DDM, Picture
* Corsairs of Umbar, Games Workshop, Picture
* Merisiel, Pathfinder Battles, Picture
* Orcs with Bows, Reaper Bones, Picture
* Orcs with Spears, Reaper Bones, Picture
* Orcs with Swords, Reaper Bones, Picture
* Zombies, Reaper Bones, Picture
* Wolves, DDM, Picture

Your dirt and grass bases always look so much more vibrant than mine.

I feel like I fail at the most basic of things >_>

I finished painting my Impact Miniatures Chibi Pony pack today.

Chibi Pony #1
Chibi Pony #2
Chibi Pony #3
Chibi Pony #4
Chibi Pony #5
Chibi Pony #6

I'm planning on starting up a Ponyfinder game in the near future (possibly running Iron Gods AP.) ^_^

Thanks! But I must disagree. I think the basing on your skeletons are much better than mine. Basing is one of the things that I kind of gloss over at the moment.

Oh, time to bump this. An update is way overdue. Recently I've hit a bit of snag inspiration wise but luckily I haven't been as inactive as the lack of updates would suggest. Although I've lately just been painting enough to fill the main goal I set up at the beginning of the year (to finish a minimum of four quickdips per week) I realized that I have to pick up the pace significantly if I want to hit the other major goal: to finish all 2014 purchases during 2014 (excluding kickstarters). I don't think I will reach that goal as I have 21 regular miniatures to go and 29 quickdips. But hopefully I will be able to finish a bunch of them as I'm trying to build up some momentum.

Regular miniatures finished since the last time
* Kassata Lewynn, Reaper Miniatures

Eowyn looks a bit goth in that pic but the other two are lovely jobs on tidy miniatures.

Good to see your still going.

I've been commissioned to paint a Warmachine Cryx army, so I'm painting like a madman to get that done.

Thanks! :) I'm actually quite pleased with how Eowyn's face turned out. I think she looks somewhat pissed off and I kind of want to make a barbarian to use the mini.

Appearently varnishing and photographing miniatures is harder than painting them, if my participation in this thread is to be believed. To my defense I will say that as winter struck daylight has become more and more scarce, and with my camera phone I needed daylight to take decent pictures. Happily however I've aquired a new camera phone which is better, and I've also "rigged" things so I can take photos indoors without having to depend on the sun. So, here is what has happened since last time:

Metal miniatures
* Luna, Hasslefree Miniatures

* Rangers of Mirkwood, Games Workshop, Picture
* Teutonic Infantry, Fireforge Games, Picture
* Teutonic Infantry Commanders, Fireforge Games, Picture
* Teutonic Infantry Crossbowmen, Fireforge Games, Picture

And with that I'm done for 2014. Bring on 2015!

Now I've finished my painting for 2014 so it's time to take a look at the goals I set up at the beginning of the year. I painted a total of 425 miniatures (40 metal miniatures and 385 plastic miniatures).

Patrik Ström wrote:

Main goals for 2014.

Finish 300 miniatures in total. [COMPLETED
If I buy a miniature in 2014 it needs to be finished* in 2014 (kickstarters excluded) [NOT COMPLETED]
Finish at least 4 miniatures a week** (that doesn’t add up to 300 total but the four miniatures is just a minimum) [COMPLETED

I did manage to finish more than 300 miniatures and to keep a pace of at least 4 miniatures per week. But since I concentrated on speed painting my plastic miniatures, and can't seem to stop buying miniatures, not all my 2014 purchases was finished within the year.

2/3 main goals completed.

Patrik Ström wrote:

Sub goals for 2014.

Finish at least 50 regularly (non-speedpaint/quickdip) painted miniatures
Finish last years metal miniature purchases (numbers might decline if I decide to sell or otherwise dispose of miniatures I feel that I don’t need, like many of the Stonehaven Dwarven Adventurers)
- Warlord games metal miniatures (4) [COMPLETED
- Hasslefree Miniatures (5) [COMPLETED
- Games Workshop (2) [COMPLETED
- Game Zone (1) [COMPLETED
- Darksword Miniatures (3)[NOT COMPLETED]
- Otherworld Miniatures (23)[NOT COMPLETED]
- Stonehaven (19) [NOT COMPLETED]
- West Wing (4) [COMPLETED
- Red Box Games (7) [NOT COMPLETED]
Finish last years speed paint purchases (numbers might decline if I decide to sell or otherwise dispose of miniatures I feel that I don’t need, like many of the modern Bones miniatures)
- Reaper Miniatures Bones Kickstarter (228) [NOT COMPLETED]
- Warlord Games (42) [NOT COMPLETED]
- DDM (2) [COMPLETED
- Mantic Games (11) [COMPLETED
- Pathfinder Battles (37) [COMPLETED
Paint my RGB Helsvakt Miniatures (8) [NOT COMPLETED]
Paint my RGB Njorn Miniatures (12) [NOT COMPLETED]

I did manage some of the sub goals but none of the more demanding. Most of the sub goals I managed to finish either included plastic miniatures (which I can quickdip) or I sold the figures.

Overall I'm pleased with 2014. I managed to shrink both my metal/resin unpainted pile (by selling a lot of miniatures) and my plastic unpainted pile (by finishing alot and selling some). I think this is the first year since I started buying miniatures that has happened. Go me! \o/

Next year I'm going to try and focus more on metal/resin again. I'm also going to forgo a weekly frequency goal, as it really sucks when I hit a painting slump (which I will).

To conclude, here are all the miniatures (with links) I finished during 2014.

Luna is a great job on a sweet sculpt. Nice work.

I am amazed by your painting prowess and pace.

Patrik;

You always have good stuff to look at but for me, the Teutonic figures all looked great. I would love to have a set that looked that well.

Awesome Patrik!

What paints do you use?

Hey Patrik, great job! If you're looking for a good spray-on varnish, I use Testor's. They have glosscoat and dullcoat. The dull is really nice for dulling out the shine, and then I go back with a brush-on clear glosscoat on to shine up weapons and such. Hope it helps!

Thanks for the kind comments!

Quickshade from The Army Painter works wonders :) I can't really emphasize enough how much of a difference it makes. Without that I wouldn't have finished a tenth of the minis. I will however back away somewhat from my "promotion" if the Army Painter Quickdip. It does work wonders but it is kind of expensive I can never use up all of it before it starts to thicken to much. My experiments with thinner to lengthen the life span haven't been all that successful. On top of that it kind of smells when you apply it and it has an extensive drying period.

So with the last few miniatures I've started to just use the Army Painter Quick Shade ink. Instead of dipping the miniature I take a large brush, lots of ink and apply it. I might be abit slower but you make up for it in drying time, and the fact that the ink always have the same consistency. What I loose is the varnish that's included in the quick dip, but since I've found (from a tip on these forums if I remember correctly) that Pledge Floor Polish (or Johnsons as it's sold here in Sweden) works great as a varnish. I haven't "handled" the miniatures which I have used the ink instead of the quickdip so I can't be certain that the miniatures are as durable, but since I use the same method (i.e. dip a few times in Pledge + seal with Vallejo brush on matt sealer) on my metal miniatures I think it will be fine. Although I handle my metal miniatures with more care so there might be a difference. Only time will tell. What I do know is that I think I get a better result "paint wise" by applying the Quick Shade ink instead of the Quick dip.

Queen Moragan wrote:

I use what I can readily get a hold of in Sweden, which means the Army Painter and Vallejo. There's also the GW paints but I don't use them since I prefer the drop bottle which both Army Painter and Vallejo uses. I also have some Reaper paints but they don't see as much use.

lorenlord wrote:

Thank you for the suggestion! I have read about Testor's spray-on varnish and spent some time trying to find it in Sweden without success. It was only recently (I think about three months ago) I found out that it has actually been banned here due to health restrictions (I can't remember exactly what they were). I haven't been able to purchase from abroad since no one will transport spreycans overseas.

A new year with new yearly goals! I aim to continue my mission of converting the sizable unpainted pile into tabletop usable figures. Last year I focused more on plastic miniature speed paints but this year I plan on moving focus back to metal/resin figures. I've decided to scrap the "X amount of minis per week" goal I've started three years ago since it works less as a motivator and more as a chore. Instead I'm just going to set a fixed number for the size of my unpainted pool as my main goals for 2014, along with my stated rule that every miniature I purchase must be finished within the year (which I reached for speed paints but not for metal/resin). Then I've set some sub painting goals to have something to check off during the year. It will be exciting to see how many of them I can reach. I also hope to make 2015 the year I shake my fear of painting Tre Manor miniatures. I've been hoarding his stuff for a long while now (he's my favorite sculptor) but the scale and detail of his minis are really intimidating. But this year I aim to start and complete a good amount of my RGB collection.

2015 main painting goals
Bring my pile of metal/resin miniatures under 375 miniatures. At the moment it is at 424 miniatures.
Bring my pile of plastic miniatures to under 450. At the moment it is at 515.
If a miniature is bought during 2015, it has to be finished during 2015. Kickstarters excluded.

2015 sub painting goals
Complete 2013’s metal miniature purchases. Total of 21 miniatures.
Complete 2013’s plastic miniature purchases (excluding Bones Kickstarter). Total of 70 miniatures.
Complete the 2012 Bones Kickstarter miniatures. Currently at 91/189.
Complete 2014’s non kickstarter purchases. Total of 19 miniatures.
Complete the DA1/DA2 part of the Otherworld Miniatures indiegogo campaign. Total of 7 miniatures.
Paint 5 Aelfar miniatures (Red Box Games).
Paint 5 Aenglish miniatures (Red Box Games).
Paint 5 Dvergr miniatures (Red Box Games).
Paint my Red Box Games goblin miniatures (ex wolf riders). Total of 35 miniatures.
Paint my Red Box Games Half Bloods. Total of 6 miniatures.
Paint 16 Helsvakt miniatures (Red Box Games).
Paint 10 Njorn miniatures (Red Box Games).
Paint 18 Red Box Games zombies.
Paint 6 Red Box Games wraiths.
Paint my Red Box Games orcs. Total of 9 miniatures.
Paint my Draugr from Red Box Games. Total of 6 miniatures.
Paint at least one dragon miniature.
Paint my remaining Reaper Miniatures. Total of 20 miniatures.

I used both “paint” and “complete”. With “paint” I mean just that. With “complete” however I mean paint, sell or any other way of getting rid of the miniature from my unpainted pile.

And now for the first finished miniatures of the year. True to form I set some goals then pick a miniature that isn’t all that connected to those goals.

Anyway:

Metal
* Bugbears, Citadel Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2

Plastic speed paints
* Beholder Lich, DDM, Picture 1
* Zombie Dragon, DDM, Picture 1

Nice work! That definitely stinks about the Testor's spray-on varnish. It works really well, IMHO. I pretty much only paint GW, Reaper, and Privateer Press models, since that's what I'm usually commissioned to paint, but it works and protects them very well under some occasional rough use. Hopefully they lift that ban and you get some available to you in 2015.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've been googling spray varnishes and I've found one that I'm going to give a try eventually. One of the problems with the GW spray I used earlier is that it frots when it's cold outside, which it is in a big part of the year :/ I would love to find a good matt spray as brush on sealer is kind of dull to apply, especially on large miniatures.

And now: more miniatures!

* Eye Beast, Reaper Bones
The Eye Beast from the first Bones Kickstarter. At first I was going to treat it as I do most other plastic miniatures which is to base coat, black line, quickshade and then call it done. However, when I started working on it I became more and more pleased with how it turned out, so I decided to give it a bit better treatment.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

* Stag Lord, Reaper
I initially bought this figure to use in the Kingmaker campaign I was playing in. However I didn’t get the miniature before we encountered the villain, and he’s sat on my shelf ever since. Quite a quick job on this one and I think he’d make a pretty nice druidy character.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3, Picture 4

* Gnome Illusionist/Thief, Otherworld Miniatures
This little guy have been sitting on my shelf basecoated and begging to be finished for about a year now. Since I’m focusing more on my metal miniatures this year, and focusing on getting them done, I picked this up and applied the finishing touches. At first I wasn’t happy at all. The whole paintjob just looked dirty. And not the good kind of “in a dungeon for a while” dirty, but just plain “sloppy paintjob” dirty. I didn’t manage to take it all the way but at the end I’m pretty satisfied with the result.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3, Picture 4

And a few quickshaded plastic figures:
* Huge Fiendish Spider, DDM, Picture 1
* Eldrich Demon, Reaper Bones, Picture 1

Next batch!

* Human Male Illusionist, Otherworld Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2

I’m working on finishing the rest of my Otherworld dungeon adventurers before the last part of the Indiegogo campaign and next in line was the Male Human Illusionist. There’s parts of him I’m pleased with and some I’m not. I could have worked more on the “skirt” and the face didn’t come together. On the other hand the figure has lots of small nicknacks that came out quite nicely.

* Fire Elementals, Reaper Bones, All of them, Flaming Sphere, Wall of Fire, Medium Fire Elemental, Large Fire Elemental

I was on a roll so I managed to finish another one. Nothing fancy, brown/grey + quickshade for the hull and some more attention directed to the eye and teeth. Easy paintjob with a pleasing result :)

* Beholder, DDM, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3, Picture 4

Army Painter's own matt varnish is quite good. Gives a very flat surface, almost on par with Testors Dullcote.
Now, it being a spray it suffers from the same "hazards" as other spray cans (subject to problems with temperature and humidity) and you have to make sure the quickdip dries completely (if you still want to use the original product instead of the inks).
The safest route, but also the most expensive one if you don't have the equipment already, is to use Vallejo (or another company, e.g. Liquitex) matt varnish through an airbrush.
No need to worry about temperature and humidity and you can batch varnish miniatures just like with a spray can.

Thanks for the tips! The airbrush does sound tempting but I'm guessing that it's a pretty heavy buy in. Not only money wise but space wise as I'm guessing that you need some kind of compressor to run the air brush?

I did use the Army Painter's spray varnish initially but stopped since I it didn't give much protection. Then I switched to brush on two layers of gloss + 1 layer of matt. I kept with that until I saw the tip of using floor polish and I haven't looked back since in regards to protection.

I've bought a spray can of Liquitex matt varnish and been waiting for the temperature to rise before trying it out. Yesterday I got tired of waiting (since it's going to be months:) and decided to try it out next to the balcony door. I'm really pleased with the result. Hopefully it will provide a extra layer of protection as well.

I’ve been busy speedpainting a few figures. A trio of ogres (4 more comming as well) since the DM in the DnD5ed game I’m in requested one. I didn’t want to dwell on them for too long so they’re all quick shaded, which doesn’t work well with skin sadly. With the four others I think I’m going to try the soft tone instead of the strong tone, or perhaps a skin wash in case I get ambitious and allow two kinds of shading.

* Ogre Executioner, DDM, Picture 1
* Ogre Warhulk, DDM, Picture 1

I also finished the Bones Hellhound because it looked like quick work. Which it was but I’m not that satisfied with the result. I might have to get another down the line.

* Hellhound, Reaper Bones, Picture 1

And lastly some experiments. Firstly the Bones figure “Grave Wright”. I was going to try some OSL but ended up scrapping it. I just don’t know how it’s done :/ Secondly the Bones figure “Labella Dermonay, Banshee”. I spray painted it white and then did a few heavy layers of blue ink. Then I highlighted the skin with a few layers of a light blue with more and more white mixed in. I’m really happy with the result.

Some nice minis there mate!

Thanks!

Oh, been a while since I updated. I guess this is the February haul of completed miniatures (although some are from January). Some speed paints, but moving towards metal minis.

The speed paints. Some turned out better than I thought they would, and some turned out worse. I think I need to buy another copy of the Ghostly Summons go get another try at it. It's a great mini but I'm not pleased with the result. The DDM Ghosts however are a favorite because of how easy and quick they where. Primed white and then a few washes of green and voila, nice looking ghosts!

* Black Orc, Reaper Bones, Picture 1, Picture 2
* Ghostly Summons, Reaper Bones, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3 (contains nudity)
* Grave Wraith, Reaper Bones, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Labella Dermonay Banshee, Reaper Bones, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Marsh Troll, Reaper Bones, Picture 1
* Night Spectre, Reaper Bones, Picture 1, Picture 2
* Spirit, Reaper Bones, Picture 1
* Ghosts, DDM, Picture 1, Picture 2

The regular paints. I'm especially pleased with "Fat King Robert Baratheon", which is my nicest paintjob in a while. I also kind of like the old Mithril Miniatures which I've had when I first started painting (except for the "Unknown female" (dunno which Middle Earth figure it's supposed to be)). The cave troll is a repaint of a paintjob I made when I first started painting, before giving it up for 15 years.

* Merisiel, Reaper Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Boldverk the Bold, Red Box Games, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Brynjar Thorir, Red Box Games, Picture 1, Picture 2

* Fat King Robert Baratheon, Dark Sword Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Broda the Easterling, Mithril Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Cave Troll, Mithril Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2, Old
* Elrond, Mithril Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2
* Unknown Female, Mithril Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2

More!

* Bronn, Dark Sword Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

I really like this figure. I painted it last year but I wasn’t satisfied with the paint job. I think this one is much better. The face still looks kind of rough but I think it doesn’t look as bad as the photo suggests. .

* Mash Half Ogre, Reaper Miniatures, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Another really cool figure. Sadly I dropped it on the floor just as I was going to seal it, and of course the axe-hand-arm piece broke, along with some paint. Quite agitated I just threw some black (and brownblack) on the joints after reglueing. Could be better, but it could also be worse.

Currently, I'm working on a Clockwork Chibi Pony from Impact Miniatures, latest Kickstarter, and a Reaper Bones Bat Swarm.

I'll post some pics once they're done.

Currently working on these three

Maiden is done
Pirate is about 70% done
Kraken is about 30% done

I'll post a pic or two once I finish the pirate, since he and the maiden are a spiritualist/phantom duo for PFS

Sovereign Court

Patrik, did you boil your bones? Might jab straightened your grave wraith's wonky sword.

I did with some. I can't remember which though since there is a big time sink between "prepping" and a finished paintjob :)

Here are a couple of the big boys from the first Reaper Bones kickstarter that I thought I might share

and The Skeletal Dragon

Patrick, it's hard to see the details in some of those. They get pixelated when I zoom in. You should post higher res photos and/or crop them closed to the mini, like your beholder above.

I'll see what I can do for the next shoot. I've been idle the past two weeks but I have a few miniatures to post. I think I stopped the cropping in favor of taking a square picture with my mobile camera, because it was one step less for each file and they all have the same dimension. When I crop they tend to differ in width (eventhough I shrink the picture with GIMP to a specific width afterwards).

Hmm, that worked out well, didn't it? I have been hitting a painting slump but not as much as my lack of updates would suggest. So here is a update with the miniatures I've finished since the last update. I'm starting to tackle my vast hoard of RBG minis, which is always nice.

This time my lack of updates isn't my fault! I've been busy!

But I did manage to finish some (and I hope to finish more in the near future):

* Rugg, Bugbear Leader, Reaper Bones, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Great (Purple) Worm, Reaper Bones, Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

* Wolf Spider, Pathfinder Battles, Picture 1
* Barghest Savagers, DDM, Picture 1
* Gnoll Barbarian, DDM, Picture 1

I always imagined purple worms as less vibrant than that, but I like it.

I like those zombies.

I didn't think more than "purple" when I painted that miniature :)
