A cone-shaped spell shoots away from you in a quartercircle in the direction you designate. It starts from any corner of your square and widens out as it goes. Most cones are either bursts or emanations (see above), and thus won’t go around corners.
The Bolded section is up to interpretation:
* Some people interpret it that you pick a corner, draw a line from the center of your square to that corner and it goes in the direction of the line (ie: shoots away from you).* Others state you pick a corner, point it in any direction you desire from that corner and then it shoots in that direction.
Your diagram is the second interpretation. The second interpretation allows people to 'shoot around corners' while the first does not.

Vovix: not that I am aware of. Personally, I use the 'shoot away from you' model with a bit of fudging if necessary.
Basically, I pick my terminus point (end point of the cone), pick the corner, and then draw a line from the center of my square, through the corner (or midpoint between corners as per Wraithstrike's comment), to the terminus. If I cannot do that (with a small fudge factor) then it is not 'shooting away from you'.
Shooting 'sideways' as per your diagram could not do that. However, mine is only one interpretation.

I see what you mean now. I guess both would be squares, but if you do the single cone, which looks like a point it should have a similar effect.
So by the OP's diagram he should be able to pick the closest X since the game does not have facing any fire the cone at that angle assuming my mental image is matching what is going on correctly.
